Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
Alright guys hear me out. I believe in Himalayan Salt rocks. I have one at home, I keep one at the office, and I even use a small inhaler for it when I can remember it. This stuff helps. Yeah, it's just a rock but it helps me. Placebo or not it's good. I am trying to figure out a way to introduce this to my CPAP. I'm not going to add it to the humidifier cause I know it'll cause a good mess and require nearly daily cleanings. But what would be the downside to taking a ball jar, putting in/out fittings on the lid, throwing some rocks in there and plumbing it inline with my CPAP hose? Yes, the humidity would cause the rocks to sweat. Something like this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2906030 but with salt instead of water.
My main concern is my CPAP decreases pressure on the exhale. With the extra volume would the CPAP have a hard time detecting this? And overall anyone have any other concerns that I'm overlooking?

Huh? would the extra volume keep the cpap from detecting that it reduced pressure?Divinitous wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 8:49 pmMy main concern is my CPAP decreases pressure on the exhale. With the extra volume would the CPAP have a hard time detecting this?
*decides to ignore that and move on*.
I won't address your fetish for NaCl crystals... there *is* some evidence that inhaled salt can be beneficial, such as living near the sea, or, there's a hotel in Russia that's in an old salt mine, but that's a lot of salt in the air (ie, the air sparkles) not just a lump of the stuff sitting in the room with you, but... whatever floats your boat... the power of placebos is proven.
As to your extra container, it shouldn't cause an issue, as long as it's airtight, it's very similar to the F&P add on humidifier.
You might want to get one of those instead, then you can have *heated* salt in your airflow.

Re: Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
Actually adding it to the water would increase the humidification... possibly by quite a bit. Salt increases evaporation. I'm not sure it would be hard to clean. the usual vinegar rinse would probably do the job.

Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"
Re: Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
We have a forum member who has routinely added salt (and a lot of it) to the water in their humidifier chamber and never really had a problem cleaning it I don't think.
I might be inclined to try it and just have a spare chamber handy just in case it creates a problem that can't be cleaned up (good idea to have a spare chamber anyway...they can get dropped and broken...I have first hand experience in that area
and it always happens on a Friday night and the DME isn't open until Monday.)
I can't remember who that forum member is though...if I remember who it was I will post a link to their discussion about it.
I do know that the person feels like the extra salt really helps the nose congestion stuff.
Whether it actually physically does much...dunno but she/he thinks it does and that's the most important thing.

Re: Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
Yeah, I had read that post and that's sorta where the original idea came from. My concern is I don't always have time to give the humidifier a daily cleaning and I am already seeing a slight bit of rust/corrosion at the bottom of my humidifier chamber. Cpap was bought used so I have no idea of its history.Pugsy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:22 pmWe have a forum member who has routinely added salt (and a lot of it) to the water in their humidifier chamber and never really had a problem cleaning it I don't think.

Having the salt in a glass chamber seems to give me some flexibility. Maybe this is getting too complex.
I'll try picking up a second humidifier chamber and throwing a few salt rocks into it.

Re: Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
Can you just put the salt in a shallow tray or jar, filled with water, and place by air intake?

Re: Himalayan Salt inline with CPAP hose.
That, I would suggest NOT doing.. you really don't want salt air (assuming there's any salt coming off the chunk) going through the machine itself. At least, I wouldn't.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 12:23 pmCan you just put the salt in a shallow tray or jar, filled with water, and place by air intake?
Corroding the replaceable humidifier chamber is one thing, corroding the sensors or motor inside, that's another.

- Acknowledge you're wrong, and try not to do it again

- Start calling him names
- Report him for being mean and wait for Pugsy to post about how management doesn't like censorship and this isn't Apnea Board

OK, I'll pick "a", please disregard my previous post.

I think I'm laughing a lot more than I *should* at that, but it seems to be a pretty comprehensive list... Though in all fairness, you did leave off "point out to him where he's wrong, so he can learn something".

Though I expect jnk may add to it.

a+: Learn from him and thank him?
We are ALL works in progress here. And I appreciate where the board seems to be at the moment. Less name-calling. Fewer knock-down-drag-outs. Cool. I tend to give Pugsy a lot of credit for that just because of the example she sets.
No neighborhood is made up of all Big Birds, though. Everyone knows that Oscar the Grouch often expresses gentle helpfulness in his own unique way.
But what do I know? I've never heard of Himalayan salt rocks.
And I once had to go to the doc myself to have him treat my acute placebo deficiency.
The name "Dog Slobber" is my favorite name used on this board. Makes me chuckle every time I see it.
