need emergency power supply in London

Post by ftaylor » Sat Sep 12, 2015 4:03 pm

My wife has always wanted to visit London, so we planned a trip for our 30th wedding anniversary. I have forgotten to pack my power supply. I use a Remstar Plus M Series. I went to Maplin (very cool electronics store) and bought a replacement that is 12 volt and 3 Amp. When I use it , it shuts off about every 2-5 minutes (likely not clean power to the unit?). The quickest I can have one Fedexed from home is Tuesday, so that is three long nights of no sleep for either one of us. Anyone have any suggestions? It kills me that I am ruining this trip for her. She really deserves to have a great anniversary.

Need Emergency Power Supply in London

First, ask the hotel concierge. They could help you, possibly from their lost and found box.
You need to change your title to "need emergency power supply in London",
so someone there might read your thread and respond.

They must sell CPAPs in London.

Like here in the States, they are unlikely to be open on weekends,
---but a hospital might be helpful.

And ask the hotel if they have a recliner somewhere for you to use overnight - staying relatively upright helps in a pinch.

Be sure the humidifier is turned off. Also, try plugging the power directly into the blower unit, bypassing the humidifier.

If you don't have the recliner option, sleeping somewhat sitting up on a couch could help

Sleeping on your stomach or your side might help, too.

Is there Craigslist for London? You might luck out and find someone selling an old M-series machine for cheap. Or even a modern PRS1 machine or a ResMed S9 or A10 machine. Look at the links in my signature line to see what model machines are good. Do you know what your pressure settings are? If you can get your machine running for a few minutes look on the display when you start it to see what pressure it's blowing. (Note: I checked craigslist London, and no CPAP listings other than one that ships from the US, and looks suspicious anyway. Maybe there's something similar to CL for London.)

The M series should work off of an external power supply or something like a portable car jumper battery, if you just can get one that supplies enough clean current.

Is is possible that you're getting a poor electrical connection? Try wiggling the connector where it plugs into the machine.

Where is home? Did you fly or drive to London?

It has nothing to do with clean power.

That is a 36 Watt power supply and is basically not adequate for your xPAP machine. You might get by with it if you do not run the humidifier, but it will deliver nowhere near enough energy to run the blower and humidifier.

You would most likely need a 12 Volt (at about) 8 Amp power supply to be sure of being able to run the blower and humidifier.

It might be too late to help - I'd contact your holiday insurance provider if you have one, or else nhs 24 on 111 - they will at least be able to point you in the right direction - a local chemist might help too. If you are uk based, your own sleep clinic should be able to advise as well.
