My ex had it done in the 90's after years of "lower back pain" that they couldn't figure out. It was the best thing ever - no more back pain. It was one of the early keyhole surgeries so she ended up with 6 weeks off because that was what the insurance said she should take and HR insisted on it......

It never caused any dietary issues.

A hyper active gall bladder is still a sick gall bladder. The surgery goes a whole lot simpler if done when a person isn't acutely ill because of it. That's when the chances of complications can increase and/or recovery time doesn't go nearly as smoothly.

Anecdotally, my wife had hers out laparoscopically about 10 years ago. She was in much distress prior, but the surgery was easy for her and provided relief. She had to watch her diet for a little while after, but soon forgot all about it. Of course, with any procedure there is always risks.
