Noisy Machine

Hi All,

I have been using my machine for almost a year. I finally got my humility working correctly on the machine but in the last week or so the cpap part of the machine has developed a whistle type noise that makes it very difficult to sleep if i wake up at night. This is in the machine itself, not the hose. Any suggestions other than sending back for repairs. The thought of not having even my noisy machine makes me panic a bit. That says a lot about how well i know feel with this therapy.

One thing to check to maybe fix the whistle...it's a maybe but easy to check.
Take the water chamber out of the humidifier and look in the very back and sides for the little round silicone (pliable) gaskets and make sure that they are nice and secure. Sometimes those gaskets get a little crimp in them.

I had a similar issue with my PRS1 and since it was still under warranty, I returned it and got a new one. The sound of the high pitched noise was too much to ignore and I didn't want to risk it getting worse. You might want to consider doing the same if Pugsy's suggestion doesn't work. In my case, (my DME is Apria) I called and discussed the problem and told them I wanted a replacement. I went into the local office that afternoon and got a new one.

there is another gasket that seals the lid of the humidifier to the base. make sure the surfaces are clean and dry between the top-gasket-base

Thank you for all the suggestions. I have looked at all the seals, machine to humidifier/humidifier to humidifier/humidifier to hose, all seem well and snug. I was a bit surprised to see the dust on top of the components but why not, since i never have cleaned that part of the machine out. I put water in the humidifier, covered the hose w/my hand and turned it on. The noise is coming from inside the machine. I afraid i will have to sent it in. I don't have insurance coverage for dme and purchased it from the sponsors of this site. I do have a rma for it for sending it back because the humidifier was not working but then started to work so i didn't sent it in. I pay the postage and can rent a machine until mine is fixed. that all takes time. next time i will just buy something from a dme i can walk into. i almost am considering buying a new one and then sending it in. wasteful and i probably won't but i don't like to sleep with out the machine. I don't feel as good and i know why!

If it's under warranty, us should be an even exchange, no repair. Although not sure how this works without a dme involved.

This is why many of us have and recommend having spares/backup machines. With any/all machines, it's the "luck of the draw" and while some machines may run flawlessly for many, many years, some just seem to have problems early on.

My first machine developed a little "wheeze" in the C-Flex function as it changed speeds on exhale......after about a year of use. I happened to find and buy a lightly-used machine from another forum member who was switching from Respironics to ResMed machines. Then, I sent in my first machine (through CPAP.COM) for warranty repair and they sent it into the factory and it's been perfectly silent ever since.

My machine started to get very loud about a year ago. I the only option i have to help minimize the sound is to wrap it in a big fat towel to dampen the sound. It's the only thing that makes it somewhat tolerable. I'll also use a white noise app on my phone to augment if it gets really bad.

You might do the math with rental cost while your machine is being evaluated and maybe just a craigslist purchase so you spend the money towards something you own and then you will also have a back up machine.

It looks sort of like I see AFlex and if is then that means the PR S1 is a 50 Series APAP model 550. The 50 series has the lighter colored face plate around the LCD screen.
Looks prices start at 95 probably for the older Legacy machine that is shown.

and another M series APAP asking 100 which is more reasonble

Anyway you can look in your area and see if you find something fairly inexpensive that would work for a back up emergency machine....compare that to rental costs.
