Got a new s9, Kinda mad since the s10 just came out

Post by chriscummings83 » Wed Aug 13, 2014 5:36 am

Is there anything I can do since, the s10 just came out. I got my s9 yesterday from the DME. My insurance is renting the machine, so maybe I have some bargaining power?

I slept on it for a total of 1.7 hours

I have the data from sleepy head but haven't had time to understand what they mean, so here goes my stats.

Date Sleep Wake Hours
8/12/14 20:44 04:07 01:57:04
Hypopnea 0.51
Obstructive Apnea 0.00
Unclassified Apnea 0.00
Clear Airway Apnea 0.51

I wonder if the Clear Airway woke me up? Or me waking up caused a Clear Airway

Seems like a loaded question. Lol.
Just figured I would get the latest machine. The S9 is way better than my S8.

So are you saying to wait a year then change out.

More likely, the clear airway apnea is an artifact of you waking up (or as some call it sleep wake junk) - when we're awake we don't breathe as regularly as when we're asleep and, since the machine determines your airway isn't blocked, it may score the irregular breathing as a central apnea. It looks like things were going well for the 2 hours you used the machine - AHI is low and leaks seem under control. Not bad for a first night. Just curious, what was it that got in your way of using the machine for more than 2 hours? (not judging - I didn't wear my mask for more than 2 hours my first night either). I suspect Pugsy will be on soon to give you some tips on fine tuning the graphs.

When posting images of reports this is what I like to see
The left side like you have it shown and on the right side graphs these graphs
Events
Flow rate
Pressure if using auto adjusting pressures
Leak graph
Flow limitation graph (S9 machines) only if it is looking active with lots of stuff going on.

If you go to the events tab in Sleepyhead (left side) and click on Clear airway events and then when it opens up to show that clear airway event time and duration ...if you click on it SleepyHead with zoom in right on that event. If it got flagged pretty much right near the time you turned the machine off then it likely was an awake breathing irregularity getting flagged as a central.

When I goto sleep I'm tired so I lay there trying to sleep and poof I'm out in 20 mins.

I for some reason sleep 2 - 3 hours and wake up. When I do. I just feel like I'm being forced to breathe. Like I'm fighting to not swallow air. ( I know I can turn the machine off and back on to restart the ramp). Feels like it's 200 times easier to fall asleep without the cpap at that time

I'm gonna try and try. 5 years ago I bought my machine myself. So I stopped using it. Didn't feel a difference. Now insurance is paying for it. So I have to use it or lose it.

Very bad habit to get into and you know what they say about bad habits.....easy to make and very hard to break.
Try to avoid that slippery slope if you can.

You appear to have EPR turned on. When EPR is turned on, the machine lower the pressure for the exhale and then return it at the start of the inhale. This might be the reason for the forced breathe feeling, you can try turning EPR down or off.

Here is the clinical manual if you don't have it

I'd suggest waiting on the Air 10 models.... The details about which of the models are fully data capable is not clear yet.

You might be the lucky 1st person in line to get an Air 10 Escape variation.

My father, who was a mechanic an later a software teacher always said "Never be the first to buy the new model" whether it came to airplane engines, cars or computers, though with regard to airplanes to failure tends to b a bit more terminal.

On a positive note about the upcoming S10 series, there are bound to be a lot of folks that have to have the latest and greatest... that means there will probably be some reasonably priced used S9s being offered for sale on CPAPtalk pretty soon!

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

So exactly what is it that you feel you have to gain by getting the S10 instead of keeping your S9. From information released about it to date, therapy quality and comfort features are the same for both machines. Do you like the appearance of the S10 better? Is that enough to make you want to risk having to deal with problems of an untested new model?

My take on this is that xpaps tend not to be something that you show to your friends and neighbours, like a new car, so that they can oogle over it. So unless there are functional differences between them, who cares if you have this year's or last year's model . As they say, your mileage may vary ...
I'm workin' on it.

The AirSense 10 models vs. the S9 models is like the 2015 model Ford vs. the 2010 model Fords. It's nice and shiny, but once the "new" wears off, there's some technological improvement, but it's not that different. The S8's were like the 1980 model Fords.

The S9 was a big step. The A10 is a much smaller step.

The A10 has the cell modem built in. You can turn this function off if you want to.
It has an "AutoRamp" feature that doesn't start ramping the pressure up until after it thinks you're asleep. Most of us turn off the ramp function once we adjust to CPAP.
The humidifier is built in. While good in some ways, you can no longer take the humidifier off to make the unit smaller for travel or if you don't need it.
The AutoSet for Her model has an optional "AutoSet for Her" mode designed for females. It sounds like it might do some good, but it's not obvious that it's a big advance.

Other than good looks, there are no obvious major improvements for the user that I see in the literature so far.

One possible reason for wanting the newest machine is that parts and service might be harder to get in the future for the older machine - I doubt that's much of a factor in this case.

And Chris - if all your nights are as good as the one in the chart you posted (except more sleep time) you're doing extremely well... that machine works for you.
