new mask

Post by craftery » Thu Jun 19, 2014 12:46 pm

I recently changed my mask from a nasal to a full nose and mouth mask and this morning I woke up with a severe sore throat
Does anyone think it's beacuse of the mask I have noticed my mouth open most of the night with this mask.

thanks Christine

Mouth breathing can do it. Do you have a humidifier? If so crank up the setting and see if that helps.

What are your pressure settings, your leak rate and your AHI?

Dry mouth from mouth breathing might cause a sore throat.
So could ineffective therapy allowing a bunch of snores to materialize as in you might need a little more pressure to get the job done with a full face mask than with a nasal mask.

Dry mouth and sore throat from mouth breathing happens to full face mask users too. Some people's mouths just dry out faster and easier than others and sometimes even using maximum humidity delivery doesn't prevent it.
It's a common complaint from full face mask users. Adding something like Biotene helps some people and not others.
It simply goes along with mouth breathing.
Some meds cause drying of the mouth too.

OR the mask isn't fitted properly (wrong size, bad fit) and when moving overnight it became dislodged and allowed lots of leaks around the edges.

I get blocked nose when I have the mask on, and then I breathe through my mouth and get a sore throat!

For me it works the opposite. If I lie down on the bed to read a little before falling asleep, I sometimes get a little blockage in my nose. As soon as I put my mask on the pressure from the machine opens up my nostrils.

Is your mask sized properly? Generally the top of a FFM needs to rest on the bridge of the nose. If it is down lower, it might cause a bit of the nostrils to narrow.
