brand new cpap user 1st night

Post by wantsleep » Sat Jun 14, 2014 10:06 am

Well, was just issued my Phillips resperonics system 1 yesterday and my first night using it, really didn't see/feel much change:( Still woke up, and after 4.5 hours took it off. Please tell me that there is just a "adjustment period". I see all these other users that felt great after their first use, and Im very happy for them, just hope my day comes, because I really need to sleep. Thanks a lot and happy sleep everyone!!!!

Yes, there is an adjustment period. For many people it takes a long time to start feeling a lot better, it's not an overnight thing. It took me several weeks to start sleeping through the night, and my first week was horrible.... adjusting to the mask is the hardest part for almost everybody, and some people have to try many masks before they find one that fits well. For me, I had a good mask from the start, but it wasn't until I discovered mask liners that things started looking up for me; that was when I knew that I could do this. Stick with it, keep reading and asking questions, and you will master this thing called CPAP.

Sometimes the changes are subtle - like family and friends will comment on your "good mood" or that you look more "healthy". Some of us were so severe that any sleep at all makes us feel better. If you want, start a journal. Sit down today and write a detailed description of your moods, your feeling your health before today. Then every day write out how you feel mentally, physically and emotionally, what you did that day. In a week or two go back and read it and compare to the first entry.

But also remember you have had OSA for many years and it does damage that has to be repaired. It is like getting a cast on your broken leg - the cast will help you heal but it won't allow you to go running.

And remember you only used it for 4.5 hours and then you slept without it for 4 hours, undoing some of the good of the first 4 hours. Most of us use it when we sleep all the time we sleep.

Wantsleep, I'm new at this too. Last night was my first night, and when I put my mask on and got in bed I just told myself that it is what it is. For the most part my mask is comfortable and I just made myself keep it on all night. Woke up feeling pretty good, but now I feel like I've been run over by a truck. So, I'm going to stick with this because this has to be more healthy and eventually I believe I'll feel better. From what I've read, it takes time. I wish you the best.
