New to cpap

Post by jlockwoodrn » Mon May 26, 2014 9:39 pm

Good Evening! I just started CPAP therapy and I have a question. I am trying to use my CPAP as much as possible, but I am facing a major obstacle. I often get a tickle in the back of my throat during the night. I have found that this causes me to wake up coughing and then gasping for air since I am using a nasal mask. This of course freaks me out and makes me nervous about putting the mask back on. I have just started using a saline spray to help. Has this happened with anyone else? I thought I may need to switch to a full face. Any suggestions would be great. I know I feel better the larger I sleep with it at night, just need to get over this hurdle. I started CPAP 4 days ago!
Thank you!!!

Hi Jlockwoodrn and welcome to the forum! You are in a great place here for help and information (as always, use your judgement - you will soon find out who are the reliable people for the best info)

It would help others to help you if you add your equipment to your signature. Go to "user control panel", "profile" "edit equipment".

The tickle in the throat, coughing and waking up gasping for air sounds very unpleasant, and I'm sure can be fixed.

For starters, are you using any humidification and/or heating equipment? If so, which, and what setting?

Secondly, have you practiced using your machine in a waking setting? Choose a time when you can relax but not plan to sleep, eg, watching TV. This can help you get accustomed to the sensations, and you will be awake should the tickling start again. If the tickling happens when you are awake, your body might learn it is not a big deal and not wake you up in a panic. I usually semi rouse, then turn over in my sleep if that happens. Practice talking with the machine going - it is possible! Then practice gently coughing with the machine going.

Don't lose heart, the problems with starting xpap can be solved, and you will feel so much better and be much healthier once your therapy is consistent.

That happens to me if the humidity is too low.

Thanks for the advice. I currently have the humidity set on 4. I slowly increased it over the past two nights thainking that could be a cause. I will spend some awake time with the mask and see if those adjustments help! Thanks again!
