I have been newly diagnosed and have spent two nights with my Respironics Bipap auto SV Advanced machine from Phillips. I have complex sleep apnea and was told I have 72.4 episodes per hour with my lowest oxygen level going to 78%. My question is the AHI was 17 on first night and last night was 20.8. Does that mean I am having 20.8 events an hour?

Hi SK, welcome to the forum. Yes, AHI is the average apnea/hypopnea events per hour.

The AHI shown by the machine is a definite improvement over your untreated 74+.
It is not uncommon to still have numbers over 5 in the first few days.
As you get used to the machine your reported numbers should work its way down.
Two nights in, you are doing great. If you could share your leak numbers it might help.

Do you have reporting software?
Pugsy can get you a link to download software so you can see what is going on.
It is important to differentiate between obstructive, central, and hypopnea events.
My experience with ASV is that there are reported elevated levels of hypopneas which may be ignorable if they are in they 4 to 8 range.

Hi, when I started CPAPing 3 years ago I also had AHIs between 10 and 26, and fragmented sleep. It took me 2 years to adjust the kind of mask, pressures set-up on the machine, use of a chinstrap, etc., until I reduced the AHIs to below 5 (per hour). In my opinion the main help in reducing the AHIs was the actual continuation of PAP treatment. See it here:

Thank you all for your replies. The first night the AHI was 17 second night was 20.8 and last night it was 24. I was given the software PR Sleepmapper. I tried to download ResScan and did not pick those drivers as instructed but I do not get that download data screen pictured. When I click on the screen that has 1 new patient/open patient 2 data download 3 Review data 4 Reports I open patient to my name then click 2 data download it says no data found. So Not sure what to do. Sleepmapper shows AHI, Mask fit, therapy so I would like to use ResScan as it is more comprehensive.

Rescan only works with ResMed machines and you have a Respironics one.
Your machine collects full data so you should be good to go.

You will need to get one of the Encore programs or SleepyHead to be able to read your SD card.

Okay I have downloaded Encore Basic when I click open it says unknown file type. I have downloaded it three times with same result. I have Windows 7. What do I do now. I am not very computer literate.

My apologies, with the AutoSV Advanced, only Encore Pro will work.
I misread your equipment to mean Auto BiPap, an entirely different machine.

The best solution is to dowload the latest version of Sleepyhead from the SourceForge web site.
I have the same machine and SH now works after much effort from the author.

In between the CA on the flow rate is a VS. What is that? Could not find it in the glossary of SH.

Looking at your graphs, it seems as if your machine is keeping the inhale pressure up near 20 cm H2O for most of the night in response to your central apneas. You might think about going back to your doctor and seeing if raising the maximum pressure to 25 cm H20 will help. The report of PTB% of 96% seems at odds with the pressure graphs. Without seeing the Encore Pro graphs, its a little difficult to tell when and where the machine is switching into ventilator mode. Perhaps there is another part of the graphs that shows that.
I think that I will have to download Sleepyhead and run a comparison.
