inexpisive stand along humidifier

Post by boert » Fri May 16, 2014 9:22 am

Being new to cpap, the only thing I have found irritating so far is the dry mouth when waking up.

Any suggestions on a reasonably priced stand along humidifier that fits most machines?

Depending on your blower, a dedicated humidifier may offer more features.

What machine are you using now?
Are you using a humidifier now? If so at what setting?
If you are mouth breathing a lot there's a good chance that the dry mouth is related to mouth breathing and even the best humidifier set to maximum setting might not be enough to rehydrate the mouth.

The only stand alone humidifier that I know of that works with pretty much all machines is the F & P HC 150

How about you add your equipment to your profile so we know exactly what you are using. Depending on what you are using there might be some additional options available that you aren't aware of to add more moisture (if you are currently using a humidifier).

I am thinking fogger. I am going to build one and try it out, I to get dry mouth and hate it.

should work if done right. I have a humidifier and it is set to max and the water runs real low in the mornings, have yet to do a 7+ hour sleep and am thinking that there will be no water left if I do get 7 or more hour sleep as there is very little left after 6 hours

got ideas for that as well. got tons of ideas

Many times dry mouth is caused by mouthbreathing. NOTICE, if you are mouthbreathing, your treatment is going out your mouth........ The only way to tell if you mouthbreath is to use the software to calculate your leak rates or take measures to prevent mouthleaks. Jim

I would NOT use a fogger in your room - you'll mess up the furniture, etc. and give yourself all kinds of trouble - unless you're a plant of course. Have you tried any full face masks that would allow you to mouth breathe without losing therapy air?

A fogger may be a death blow to electronics. --very bad idea!
They are also not anywhere near as effective as my attached heated humidifier.
I used an ultrasonic fogger at my desk before cpap, and the effect was negligible.
After starting cpap, my nasal passages stayed moist until the following night.
You may need to try a full face mask, or work on keeping your yap shut while you are sleeping.

Unless you use actual distilled water in a cool mist fogger, you will be creating huge amounts of tiny white crystalline precipitate all over your room. It may even be small enough to pass through the white fine filter and directly into your lungs.

So, either the HC150 mentioned before or make a similar one yourself.
If you try making one, rainout will be an issue but not insurmountable with careful attention to insulation.

You might look into a passover humidifier. It worked fine for me and relatively inexpensive, with no white dust or other problems. The baffles also quiet down a noisy machine.
