Ahi Numbers on Machine?

Post by bworthey » Mon May 12, 2014 8:24 am

Trying to figure out what my AHI numbers mean on my machine - it gives me a reading for 1,7, and 30 days. 7 days is 0.3 - what exactly does that mean?

Those are 1/7/30 day averages per hour for the AHI as reported by a PR S1 60 series machine of some model.

So 7 day average is 0.3 which means over 7 nights the overall average AHI is 0.3....and over a sleep period of say 8 hours...means an average of 2.4 events of some sort for the entire 8 hour period.
These numbers are excellent.

Take a look at the Sleepyhead tutorial thread link in my signature line. It goes into more detail as to what AHI means.

Generally....AHI of less than 5.0 is considered acceptable treatment...yours is less than 1.0...means excellent treatment
assuming no large leaks of any great length of happening to impact therapy effectiveness.

The large leak number on the screen ...that's % of time in large leak...so if it says 0.0 % that means no large leaks.

You can go here and request the clinical/provider manual for your machine
http://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-p ... tup-manual
It will explain in greater detail what you can see on the machine and what it means.
You can also use SleepyHead software with your machine to get even more details than the LCD screen offers.

Ok thanks. Large leaks says 0. I had searched for some info and all I was finding was numbers like 5, etc. so the0.3 was throwing me off. I didn't know if that was a percentage or was reported differently or something or really was just that low. Makes sense now though. Good to know at least from that perspective it's working. Guess I'm just not getting enough sleep!

Sometimes our reports on paper look like we should feel great but that often doesn't play out in real life because there's so much more to feeling those good numbers than the numbers themselves.

Hours of sleep is critical...4 or 5 or 6 hours isn't enough for most people.
Then..are those hours of sleep (even if we are getting 7 to 8 hours) fragmented with a lot of wake ups for whatever reason?
Fragmented sleep will kill sleep quality no matter how many hours of sleep we get
Then..there are simply other things that impact how we might feel besides sleep apnea and the machine can't fix a problem that is unrelated to sleep apnea. Some of the common culprits along those lines are potential side effects from meds or pain or mask problems or general health issues or simply bed comfort.

My biggest culprits...pain and hours of sleep as I need close to 8 hours to feel my best but often pain not only wakes me often but simply prevents me from laying in bed asleep much past 6 to 6 1/2 hours.

Finally....sometimes with everything optimal....hours of sleep..no fragmented sleep beyond 2 or 3 minor wake ups where we go right back to sleep...no pain...no med side effects..no thyroid issues....no nothing that we might blame feeling less than optimal on...sometimes it just takes time for the good numbers to impact how we feel

And sometimes we expect the machine to make us into something we never were....I was never a morning person where I woke up rearing to face the world. Optimal cpap therapy isn't going to make me into something I never was in the first place no matter how much I wish it or how good my sleep is.
