help on the quattro

Post by andy5805 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 12:53 am

hi guys

back after many weeks good sleep but this week has been awful and I'm stressed and miserable again

using Quattro, F&P Icon min pressure 7, on auto

for some reason this week leaks have started bothering me- there is an uneasy trade off between me injuring the bridge of my nose, and horrible leaks into the eye waking me instantly. I am a side sleeper - I know no other way I cannot sleep on my back just to accommodate a mask which will not let me sleep on my side, so I sleep on my side, and sooner or later the jet comes out and starts hammering my eye and I wake up. IF I put it tighter, this sometimes stops, but I get a damaged nose bridge. There seems no middle ground. This week, I've had to bandage up the nose to let it heal, so I get even more of the side jets

is there any way to make this mask stop doing this? I'm aware of fitting how the top bits don't go tight and how the air cushion is supposed to help etc etc etc, but there seems no middle ground. Last night I had to take zopiclone at 2am for first time in ages, just to make me stop panicking, I was panicking because I had NO sleep two nights ago and was trying to sleep when the sun came up, I went to work a complete corpse and I was afraid of it happening a second time this week

Is there no way at all to side sleep with this mask? I try the edge of pillow it still moves, my nose is so thin one millimetre left or right and the jets of air come out again and I'm woken up. This isn't how it is meant to be, therapy is waking me up now not sleep apnea, rock and hard place.

Is it the regular quattro with the forehead piece or the quattro fx?

Is it leaking at the top, bottom, sides, or more than one location? When you first put it on, or later once you have slept a little? Light hissing, lots of hissing, or major mask farting?

Have you watched the video, taming the quattro?

Some other things to try if you haven't already - clean your face before bed in case skin oily is making it slippery. Wash the cushion with dawn or similar product to remove any grease. Try a mask liner (you can make your own with an old t-shirt).

Is your headgear too loose or too snug? I had to special order smaller headgear. Is your headgear old and needing to be replaced? Does the cushion need to be replaced? Most people get 2-4 months per cushion and notice more leaks after that. That could be why it is bothering you now, but not before.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

it's a regular Quattro

thanks for you advice, I've done most of the things in taming the Quattro and I'm religious about cleaning my face with soap and mask, I don't use much if any lanolin due to face waterfalls from that but what is dawn?- I think it's down to nose congestion and side sleeping, I'm going to post another thread on this as I still need advice and I can pass on what I've learned, I'm at least half awake today!

the hissing is in the eye, it wakes me up every time, its because my nose doesn't work. I need a plan B for this - it's all about the nose, It's not acceptable to me for CPAP to only work when my nose isn't congested, it's an all or nothing scenario, either I'm 100% well rested or a danger to myself or others, the nose is blocked during the night when this happens for some reason but I do not feel I have a cold but I must have an infection, so this then increases pressure around the area next to the eye, and hissing starts because the air cannot go up the nose, and the machine builds the pressure, and the mouth opens more. I'm going to do a thread on this as I don't know what I can do, but I can publish steps I have taken that helped me a little bit

thanks for the help

I use quattro air, and I had great trouble with leaks until I started using mask liners - RemZzzzs. I am a side sleeper too; my pillow is a tempurpedic pillow and allows for the mask not to slide around, but I'm also sleeping toward the edge of the pillow. Mask liners were especially helpful for controlling the leaks around my eyes. There are pillows you can buy that have cutouts for the mask - google "cpap pillow" to find them.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

Seconded on the padacheek liners. I used to have leak issues with my Quattro but liners from padacheek did away with them. I am a side sleeper too.
