Newbie question ResMed Auto S9

Post by TPS316 » Fri Apr 11, 2014 1:07 pm

I am about 20 days in using the new APAP.. The pressures are set fairly low since the sleep studied do not indicate the need for high pressures.

Looking at the data using the ResMed software the machine is controlling the events fine with just a couple per hour max now. However, the data is also showing that the pressure is basically functioning as a CPAP at the high setting. Thus the confusion for me. The machine seems to be working controlling the apnea's but why is it sitting at the highest pressures configured on the APAP. Should I look into raising the max pressure or not worry about it since the apneas are under control?

Thanks

It would help if you offered more detail.
What are your min a max pressure settings? What is your AHI? Are your event OA, H or CA?

I would be inclined to increase the pressure 1 cm and use that for a week then check your results.

Is it possible that the machine was set to CPAP mode instead of APAP mode?

Next: If the machine is controlling the apneas at the current pressure level AND you're feeling fine, there's nothing inherently wrong with your pressure maxing out at the max setting. Sure, it would probably go higher if you increased the max pressure setting. But going higher may or may not make you feel any better. For many people it doesn't really matter that much, but for some of us even a little bit of unnecessary pressure increases discomfort in the way of triggering aerophagia, mouth breathing, or mask leaks.

Have you gone into the clinical menu to check the pressure settings -- to make sure they were set according to your prescription and not set to a single fixed pressure? I haven't seen your earlier posts so you may already be on top of that, but just in case, there's a link in my signature box to a video tutorial on the S9 which shows how to access the clinical menu.

Are the "leftover" events you're having obstructive or clear airway? Raising the pressure won't help if they're clear airway.

If your pressure is bumping along the ceiling all night (and it's not due to being set as a single fixed pressure), you could raise the max pressure a little to see what happens and if your AHI can go down a little more. But if you're feeling well at the current setttings I wouldn't be in a rush to raise it too much too soon.

Sounds like the problem

Hold the knob down and 1 button at the same time. this will put you into the Doctor's Menu and you can confirm the settings
