It's common for your machine to flag awake/semi awake breathing irregularities as some sort of apnea event.
The machine doesn't know if you are awake or asleep. Awake breathing is much more irregular than asleep breathing and the cpap machine can and will flag some of those irregularities as some sort of apnea event.
Nothing you can do except mentally remove any awake time scoring from any totals.

I have had a few times when I've been wide awake, and realized I hadn't been inhaling.

I've had the same experience with just a different twist. I usually bed down around six p.m. or dusk. I sleep till 1 or 2, then get up for 1 to 2 hours. Then, back to bed but this time I'm usually just dreaming with my eyes closed. Yes, sometimes I do lose track of my surroundings. But this is the thing. From 6 till 1 or 2, my machine shows the lowest AHI's. The second sleep shows a tripling of them. I have not understood either but maybe it has to do with what someone else has posted on this section.
