Recs for comfortable chinstrap?

Post by WindyCityEsq » Wed Apr 02, 2014 8:25 am

I've been using this ResMed premium chinstrap for the last few weeks: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... .html.html

It leaves my chin feeling very sore... it feels almost like it is bruised when I touch my chin, however, there are no marks left behind. The soreness doesn't go away either-- i feel it all day, and hurts to put my chinstrap back on at night.

I tried loosening it, but when I do that, the chinstrap head straps move around on my head too much, and/or I have mouth leaks.

Any recommendations on a comfortable chin strap that is still effective? Please and thank you.

On an unrelated note, I also feel pain/soreness at the bridge of my nose, or the top of my nose parallel with my eyes. I don't understand why that area is painful to touch, as I use nasal pillows (not a nasal mask) and my hose lays below my face as I sleep. I sleep on my back and on my side, interchangeably.

For a couple of years or more I have been using the "Pap-Cap" and have found it to be the best of several that I have tried. I have experienced the same sort of irritation you described with one of the Respironics Deluxe chin strap. It was almost as though there was some sort of chemical irritant in the strap material..
Another benefit from the "Pap-Cap: has been that it hasn't stretched out and become loose.

I currently use a FF mask, but several years ago when I used a nasal mask the PapCap worked very well for me.

I got this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DF ... UTF8&psc=1

Then, I sewed a strip of microfleece on the inside. Before I had the microfleece, it made marks and was uncomfortable. With microfleece, it feels cuddly. I tried the RedMed one, thinking that it would work better, but it really was uncomfortable.

Honestly, I think this is a very personal preference. Some people will like one strap and some will prefer another. The way to do this is to try a few. I have now mentally prepared myself that I'm not buying "one" of anything...I need to buy a few and find the one I like.

Like MitzyG, I use the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DF ... UTF8&psc=1 (also can be purchased at CPAP.com).

The last time I went to visit my sleep Doc, he noticed that I had the https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... .html.html (provided by my DME) The Doc said that the straps with chin pockets tend to pull the jaw backwards, and should not be used. He recommended the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DF ... UTF8&psc=1 style chin strap.

Suggesting a specific strap type is one of the few strong opinions my Doc has offered regarding any CPAP equipment and accessories.

Since the Pap Cap was too large for me, I converted a biker bandanna into something similar.
It worked--somewhat better, --but the front still slides forward until it becomes a blindfold.
Most of the time, if my mouth wants to leak, I let it; turns out it's not all that bad.
Good thing; I feel like I'm not a chin strap penguin anyhow.

I've been using Ruby Red chinstrap after recommendations on this board. I've only had it for a couple of days, but so far I find it positively comfortable and effective.

Thank you! I ordered two and will see if either works out any better than the current one I have.

Meanwhile, I have abandoned my current chin strap the last few nights bc I'd rather wake up a few times each night due to a mouth leak than experience that awful chin soreness lasting all day. Thanks again

Christina - why not try micropore 1inch tape over the lips

Jaw can't fall, lips won't open , . Works better than any chin strap i used and heaps more comfortable.

WE have enough **** on our face without another contraption. You can't use any make up or moisturiser at night though ,or else it won't stick.

Thanks for the rec, but I don't feel comfortable with the concept of taping my mouth closed. I know it works for some people, and that's great. But I don't think it's for me.

Besides, as a 30 year old woman, the inability to wear moisturizer is just not a feasible option for me, lol! I use eye cream and night cream religiously.

Thanks to all who posted! I ordered the Avalon Aire Super Deluxe Chin Strap and the Pap Cap. I like how both of these lift my chin up instead of pulling it back. Both arrived in the mail yesterday. After trying them both on, I decided that I liked the Avalon Aire better bc it seemed like less of a hassle than fussing with a 2 piece night cap. So as long as it passed the "overnight sleep test," I would keep it. Slept w/it last night and it worked great, so I've decided to keep the Avalon Aire. It's comfy and effective. Only one day in though, so hopefully I'm not speaking too soon. (knock on wood) But I really liked it- so far so good Thanks again to all who responded.
