Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
Hi, All,
I'm new here... but not to CPAP use, have used one for 10 years, or so. However, I'd would appreciate some advice.
I'm on my third CPAP machine and, of course, I keep my second machine as a back-up (both digitally programmed and controlled.)
That leaves the first machine. It's an older analog design with a trim-potentiometer to set the pressure (small screwdriver slot under a cover) and a separate button to select an optional pressure ramp-up. It still works very well and was my back-up machine until last month. I'd like to sell it to someone who can't really afford the new machines, but needs the therapy, or to someone who just wants a low-cost back-up machine.
I tried to sell it on eBay but they jumped all over me! “No medical gear, no stuff needing a prescription, no guns and ammo...” you'd think I was selling a nuclear weapon! Likewise Craigslist does not allow CPAP advertisements, same policy.
I'm looking to get but a fraction of the original purchase price but, of course, there's no eBay or CL for me to check values and no way I can see to advertise it. I'd also give it to a charity if I could find one. I can set it to any requested CPAP pressure using a water manometer, very easy to do.
Any ideas what it is worth (carry bag, all documentation, tube, but no mask) and how I might dispose of this machine without scrapping it? That would be a terrible waste of well-kept, useful equipment.
Thanks for all replies.
Cheers,
WG

Actually, you can post on Craigslist under "general" for sale category. At least that is where they are in my area!

Re: Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
You might as well keep it for the "sentimental" value. You wouldn't get anything for it. Newer, little-used, data-capable machines are pretty cost-effective (cheap) nowadays.
And, I'm somewhat surprised that Craigslist isn't allowing them to be listed. Lots of forum members have reported buying/selling them on CL.

Craigslist hasn't banned cpap equipment sales in my area...I just checked.
Where did you get the information that it was disallowed?
Your old machine..it isn't going to be worth very much. No where near what you paid for it.
Heck, machines just 5 years old with digital easy to set pressures are maybe worth $100 if they have low hours of use and have full data capabilities.
In all honesty..from what you have said about how the pressure has to be set...it won't bring much and will cost as much to ship it as it is worth.
The places that accept donations of unwanted machines normally will want a much newer model from what I have heard.

I'm wondering if the fact that he's in Canada has anything to do with listing it on CL.

Craigslist Montreal has active cpap machine listings...I just checked.
Some sellers still don't have a clue...S7 Elite $350
I see a Legacy Remstar Plus for $60 though.

Pugs,
People can ask whatever price they want to, it is up the the consumer to do their homework and determine of the "deal" is worthwhile. So do and some will be ripped off.
Sad but true.

Re: Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
yeah, I know but I still have to chuckle. I guess I look at things differently. If I want to sell something I check the market and price accordingly because I want to sell it and not think that I will stumble on someone one stupid enough to pay 5 times what it is worth...but I know people like that are out there.Tino2You wrote:People can ask whatever price they want to, it is up the the consumer to do their homework and determine of the "deal" is worthwhile. I also don't sleep well knowing that I am just trying to screw someone because someone might not do their homework..but that's just me.
Last year I stopped along side the road to check on a pontoon boat....man was it in rough shape...It was a project for sure and maybe was worth $1500 because everything needed work. No price shown. The seller had a phone number and someone who was good with projects might be willing to tackle it. The guy wanted $6500 and wouldn't budge off the price...just said that's the price take it or leave it...I don't have to sell it. OKAY dude. It's still sitting on the side of the road.
If the price had been posted I wouldn't have bothered calling. I don't like to haggle. I will be interested when price is a fair price and I don't call on items horribly inflated. That's just me. I don't like to waste my time.
Do I maybe miss a deal here and there? Probably but I just don't like to haggle.

Re: Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
I suggest you post here, with full name, model #, short explanation of what it does and does not do, and approx. hrs already used. If someone wants it, they'll let you know. Good luck.

Re: Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated. I was not sure if one was allowed to post a "for sale" on this forum (some don't allow it), so that's why, as a newbie here, I asked for comments first. Anyway, here we go...
FOR SALE or for charitable donation
Make: Fisher Paykel
Model: HC200, about the year 2002
Type: standard CPAP m/c with integral heated humidifier (model HC345)
Condition: very good, air tube included, but no mask. Has a carrying case with shoulder strap. Will set to any requested pressure (verified by a manometer).
Use history: about 12,000 hours, in a smoke free house. Not used after I got my second, digital, Fisher-Paykel machine (it was then my back-up.)
If anyone wants it I'd prefer they came from the Greater Toronto Area (Ontario, Canada) and could pick it up. As someone said, shipping cost would destroy the value! Anyway. I would prefer not to have to ship it.
My sense is that this would be a good back-up machine to a more modern unit, i.e. cheap insurance.
Again, thanks to all responders.
Please send me any offers...
Cheers,
WG

Re: Advice needed on spare CPAP machine
I would suggest that you start a new post with the details with an appropriate title so that people who are looking will find it. Nobody will know to look at this thread to find a machine to buy. You could put Toronto and the name of the machine you have in the title.
