Cant inhale in the mornings lately

Post by acidragon » Thu Mar 27, 2014 12:37 pm

Hey guys been using cpap for just over a year now and loving it. However, the last few days I've been having an issue in the mornings. Usually the cpap pressure opens my nasal airway and when I take it off in the morning it closes right up. But the last few days I wake up struggling to inhale (it feels like when you are congested and need lots of effort to inhale) but when I remove the swift FX my nasal passages opens up?! Pressures have been at 7.0 auto for the longest time.

Do you use a humidifier and at what setting? If ambient humidity (where you live, central htg, etc.) has changed it might be affecting things, but I'd also see your MD to rule out other problems, possibly cardiac.

Do you use software to download and review your nightly data?
If not, I'd strongly suggest you do. Your answers may be right there.
You may need a bit more pressure.
If you're not doing so, you may need to do nasal cleansing before bedtime.
If you're using a high humidifier setting, you may want to try a lower setting. Higher humidifier settings can contribute to nasal congestion.

I agree with Den that the nightly CPAP data would be very useful to help scope this out.

But a few more things to be aware of:

How is your heart rate when you wake up like that?

What is the temperature of your hands and feet, warm and tosty or cold?

Do you feel "hungry for air"?

How much air are you breathing at that time?

Do you hear weezing or gurgling sounds when you breath? If so does the sound seem to originate in the lungs?

There are a lot of things that can make it seem hard to breath. The more information the easier to find the cause.

Take notes.

I did feel hungry for air like I was drowning. I have my humidity set at 2, I did learn first hand how higher humidity can lead to congestion. I just looked at my data and see that the last 5 mins before I woke up the flow rate started getting closer to flat line then when the waves got close to flat it started getting all erratic and going all over the place really high up and down then I woke up and shut the machine. Not sure how to post a screen shot.
