Backup machine?

Post by Islandwoman » Tue Mar 18, 2014 3:08 pm

I have been thinking of looking for a backup machine. I am happy with my RS 560. It makes no sound at all. both my husband and I were expecting some noise even though it was quiet at the DME demo. It seems like most noise complaints come from Resmed owners is that an issue or just my perception? Are the noisy ones just older?

There are noise complaint from all brand owners.
I have used both brands...the PR S1 has a little bit of noise on inhale and the S9 has a little bit of noise on exhale. Both minor and don't keep me awake. Others perceive either as quite loud and highly annoying.

If you get the same model for back up as you currently use then everything is interchangeable...so a convenience there.
On the other hand if the curiosity itch bites you big time and you REALLY want to know about the ResMed S9 and you can find a good deal on one..hey, go for it. Scratch that itch.

I personally tend to suggest that people go with what they know for sure works if they are undecided and not in to experiments much.

I agree that the noise complaints seem to be roughly equal between ResMed and PRS1. It seems to vary a whole lot from machine to machine. Or maybe the sensitivity varies a lot from person to person.

PRS1 machines probably have more "breathing" noise where the sound varies between inhale and exhale.

There have been some reports in the past year or two of S9 machines having a honking noise at some part of the cycle. I haven't heard it myself.

I just got a brand new -- actually had 2 hours on it- PR1 for $225 - so now I have travel machine as well as backup-

I have been using PR1 for 2 years and like it --
I found on Craigs list- it was simply a fellow who had
insurance buy him machine-- did not get past initial " I hate this" period and decided to sell after it sat for over a year

I agree to probably get same unit-- you will know how to set up properly etc Packer

Thank you Parker, I decided that too. I will be looking around but am not in a rush so will wait till I see a good price from a reasonably safe source.

I never hear that noise UNTIL I read about it again here.

Guess I will be hearing it tonight.

Actually, maybe I WON'T hear it tonight.
I got a new table to put my S9 on & it is quite a few inches lower than the TV tray I was using previously. So the S9 is farther away from my left ear than it was previously.

But, I'll bet I will be listening for it now.

All jokes aside.

The S9 DOES have a sound on exhale, but (at least for me) ONLY if you exhale rather strongly. I only hear it IF I think about it AND I make an effort to make it happen.

I find that the subtle sound that the S9 can make on exhale is not always there. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. In any case, maybe because I sleep with earplugs, it doesn't bother me *smile*.

You know I never noticed it either until it was brought up in the bird call thread...then I heard it every night.
And yes, it is made worse with more forceful exhaling. I have often wondered if it was a combination of exhale force and pressures used that was the trigger because some people say they never hear it and swear they don't need a hearing aid.

The S9 Adapt SV that I am using now...also has it but it is much less loud than the VPAP I was using...but then I am using lower pressures on the start up now than I was using with the VPAP. I no longer have the VPAP Auto to test it at lower pressures to see if that changed anything.
With the current 6 EPAP and PS of 3 (that's what I start the night off with) which gives me 9 IPAP...I barely can hear it and have to strain to do that.
With the VPAP Auto my starting pressures were EPAP 9, PS of 4 so IPAP of 13. I often wished whomever started that bird call thread had a bunch of pigeons pay a visit to their car.
