Questions to ask Dr about sleep studies?

Post by Rynn01 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 5:28 pm

I had my titration study last night and see the dr for the first time since before my first sleep study tomorrow. I haven't seen the reports yet, so I was wondering exactly what I should ask him about the 2 studies. The tech who did both my studies mentioned that the pressure had to be turned up quite a bit for my snoring, not apnea. Also my PLMS was probably more responsible for my fatigue than apnea. My first study showed 26 movements/hr, O2 @ either 69 or 89% (I've been told both, but I think the 89% is accurate because that's what the tech told me). My apnea score was 5.1.

Again, this is what I've been told, apparently I have to go to the hospital med records to get copies of the studies unless I can talk the dr into making copies for me.

Thanks,

They will give you a copy of the before and after. Be sure and get that. If your O2 was 89 and 5.1 AHI you passed the sleep test. Insurance won't cover a CPAP and believe me, you don't want one if you don't need it. Ask what was your sleep efficiency before and after, verify that the low O2 was 89. Ask how many O2 desaturations did you have but that's all on the test results.

You need to get the detailed sleep study reports for both sessions.
You need to get your doctor's progress notes in which he discusses what the appropriate treatment should be and why he ordered the titration study.

If you can, get the mask information from your titration study which will give you a starting point in mask selection.

If he prescribes a CPAP, then see if he will specify an auto machine with full data capability. Then YOU get the prescription so YOU can select the DME of your choice. Only give the DME a copy and keep the original for your records.
