Day time naps

Post by Woody » Tue Feb 18, 2014 6:07 am

Over the past 2 years I have had a messed up sleep cycle. I average ~8 1/2 hours of sleep
all with my cpap. But usually only about 6 1/2 hours of that is at night. I might have one or
2 naps during the day totaling 2 hours or more. Well a week a go I stopped the day day time
naps. It seems like that has lowered my blood pressure about 10 points which I am happy about.
Any one here have any experience with this happening?

I like to doze each day... sometimes for 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes a little longer. Naps are great for you, as long as it doesn't interfere with your night-time sleep.

Your question has made me ponder. My first take is that I may feel better during the day with a short nap as opposed to a longer nap. I do know that I feel worse WITHOUT a nap.

Good question...

You didn't say if you were taking naps with or without Cpap and that makes a big difference... without cpap you're putting yourself back where you were before using it, even if only for naps, so it's not surprising that your BP would be up at those times, or down when you didn't sleep without Cpap. Sleep is sleep, whenever or wherever you do it and is only going to be good with Cpap. If you have been using it though, the BP thing is surprising.

I always use my CPAP, well almost always I did have 2 naps without it about 5 years ago.
And I saw something online about having a 15 to 30 min. nap may be healthy but going
longer than this may be unhealthy.

When you stopped your naps did your night time hours increase?

Yes. I think I am sleeping about the same total number of hours as
I did before just in one long stretch.

I'm with the sheriff.

In my pre-CPAP days naps were an absolute NECESSITY. With 11 1/2 months of successful CPAP behind me, however, now and then I take a short snooze late in the afternoon or before supper. The snoozes are no more than 20 minutes in length, are undertaken without mask and gear, and occur just here and there. Some days pass without even as much as one yawn between getting up in the morning and bed at night. On some days (today is one) I beat myself into a near-stupor at the local fitness joint and then look forward to closing my eyes while sitting in my favorite chair.

Come to think of it, after I finish this submission, I will head toward that chair and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...............................

Good luck and God bless.

I LIKE naps.

Given the opportunity, I would take one (and frequently do on weekends.)

I don't usually NEED the nap -- even pre-CPAP but enjoyed it.

As long as the sleep is quality sleep it all counts -- withing reason it doesn't matter how you divide it up (as long as you aren't ruining it by getting up during some critical phase.)

I too snorkel during the day, I meant nap......but I got a habit sleeping too long, one to two hours min. Plus I am night owl and my body clock is stuffed,I am always 3 hrs behind our Aus est time as I come from Asia and the time zone is always 2-3 hrs behind Australia time zone!

But I sleep with a TMJ mouth splint as I grind my teeth in my sleep and sometime bite my tongue whist asleep and wake myself due the pain! Ouch!!! What a way to wake up! So I urge that any of you have that issue with your OSA see a dentist, who will refer you to the right person to deal with this issue. You'll sleep better without dreading when the next going to be you going rudely woken up due to the unpleasant experience of biting your tongue in your sleep!
