Got my CPAP, still no rest

Post by GavinPreacher » Wed Feb 12, 2014 2:02 pm

Got my CPAP about 5 days ago. It took a day to get used to wearing the mask, but I got there. Problem is, I can not fall asleep with the machine. Seems that when I lay down to rest my nose gets congested rather quickly. Also, i was previously diagnosed with a severely deviated septum. I wonder if that could be a cause of the problem and, if so, what can be done to help this situation?

Thanks in advance for any hints or advice.........

Give your self some time. Wear your mask at night watching tv. You have to get used to the idea itself. Trust me after. Year I feel like I got my life back. Just work with your sleep Dr and medical supplier and you will be fine. Best of luck!

My machine does have a humidifier. The mask is called WISP? WHISP? Not sure of the spelling. I have the machine info at home. It was already set for me so All i need to do is turn it on a night.

I have been using it. I put it on and sit and I am ok. Then I lay down and can not fall asleep. My nose seems to get clogged pretty easily and I wonder if that is the problem. As i said, I do have a severely deviated septum....... Not sure what else I can do. Does anyone know someone with a deviated septum who actually can rest with their machine?

thanks a bunch.......

Are you adding water to your humidifier? What is the setting on the humidifier?

It would help if you register and input your equipment on your profile. It would help us to help you.

I will do that when I get home tonight and yes, I have put distilled water in the humidifier. I thought I had it turned on. Should the air coming out feel cooler or warmer or something? I really want to avoid deviated septum surgery to get this mask to work......

for me turning the humidifier up bit helped 100% with the nose congestion. The warm moist air made the difference.

If you lay down without the mask on do you still get congested?
Or is this congestion something new that only happens with the mask on? Sometimes for some people the pressure of a mask (even one so slight as the Wisp) can cause congestion and when that happens a mask that doesn't put pressure across the nose needs to be tried.

Humidifier setting also may impact things...some people need more and some people need less.

I have a deviated septum and use my cpap. I sometimes use the NeilMed sinus rinse before going to bed. It makes a world of difference for me.

It takes a while. I've been using my machine for 6 months now and it was probably four months before I really felt a difference. It's an accumulative thing, I think.

I've been on it since Oct 22nd and I'm sleeping much worse. My sleep efficiency actually went down 10% with the CPAP. If an alternative comes along, I'm definitely going to inquire. That's no way to sleep. Can hear nothing, it's been an emotional event trying to get use to this thing. You'll probably have to drug up to sleep with that thing. I did and still can't sleep.

I had my deviated septum fixed. It really help with breathing!
Cpap therapy was extremely difficult before having it fixed.

I have trouble breathing enough air through my nose even during the day. When i lay down, it gets worse, so I breath through my mouth all night. I use a full face mask, and don't worry about my nose.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
