How often have you been required to get sleep study

Post by Country4ever » Wed Feb 05, 2014 10:01 am

......in order to get a new machine?

The doctor wrote me a script for a new machine, but cautioned me that the DME and/or the insurance company could say I had to have a sleep study first.
How often has that happened to you, and what did you do? I'm NOT having another study.......especially when I seem to be doing okay on cpap for 7 years now.

It's up to your insurance company or Medicare. You or your doctor have no say in the matter.

That may be theoretically true, but is not exactly correct.

Some doctors _want_ a sleep study done because they earn fees for procedures. No sleep study, no fees.

I do not intend to single out sleep doctors. Think about orthopedic docs and, for instance, MRIs.

All the more reason to have full data machines.
Bricks only increase the reasons (and excuses) for unnecessary tests.

My doc did a new script for another sleep study, insurance said no, they said the sleep clinic could do one at my home. My doc said what a croc...so I'm just happily sleeping...

So insurance deferred to the doctor, and you got the new machine?
Sometimes all it takes is a letter of medical necessity from the doctor-
-then all the liability falls on the insurance company. (makes them squirm; nice.)

If you have a prescription, you don't need a sleep study to buy additional machines......you can just BUY THEM. (out-of-pocket)
Typically, the insurance providers are only going to help you acquire another one after five years.......maybe.

Beyond the first one I got (for which my insurance reimbursed me 80%) after my original sleep study nine years ago, the other nine I bought were out of pocket......most from private individuals and didn't need an Rx.

I don't understand why someone would need a sleep study after using a CPAP machine that records data? Can't the doctor just look at the recent results and decide if pressure needs to be increased or lowered, and make the necessary adjustments that way? It doesn't seem like rocket science to me, and I especially don't understand why a current CPAP user would ever need to be subjected to the torture and expense that comes along with another sleep study. I can't see myself willingly doing it again. If I ever have trouble and they suggest another sleep study, I will just tweak the pressures myself until my numbers improve.
