Bloating

Post by resipiscent1 » Sun Feb 02, 2014 11:27 am

I've been using my cpap for about 2 weeks now, and I seem to feel bloated in the morning. My pressure is only 13, and I can't reach my doctor right now to ask him. Anyone expreience this when they first started? Will it go away as I get used to the machine?

It's called aerophagia; and it usually goes away.
Discussions on the topic abound, and there are hints on how to deal with it.
Just a quick peek reveals much:

It's fairly common and there are some things you can do on your own.

Please add your equipment to your profile...depending on what kind of equipment there may be a feature on the machine itself that you can adjust to help reduce the problem.
Sometimes it does go away for some people but for some people it may not go away and the problem it causes can be quite painful and problematic.

Wow, read up on aerophagia a little bit. Never heard of that before. Sounds like you are born with a tendency toward it, not just something that would typically happen to anyone. Then again, if your CPAP pressure was up waaaaay too high, even people not prone could still have it happen to them... is that right?

I experienced it within the first week or so; and it went away as I learned to deal with the pressure.
(sleeping on my left side and avoiding late, heavy meals were helpful)
For some, it may be more stubborn; some move up to bipap machines, which can help tremendously.
Sometimes sitting up to burp is enough so one can go back to sleep.
Above all, it is a tragedy if anyone allows it to get in the way of treatment.

It's the biggest problem I have with my therapy right now, 9 months in.

Even elevating the head of the bed 6" hasn't helped. That reduced the resulting reflux a bit, but I still have to contort my neck in uncomfortable ways to keep the pressure (only 9 IPAP!) from inflating me.

But I seem to be the exception.

I have been on cpap for over a year and this still happens to me, could never find a way to make it stop. It isn't painful anymore, so I guess my body has adjusted to it. One unfortunate side effect of this is that I pass a lot more gas in the morning than I ever did before cpap.
