Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
Just curious if anyone has tried an inclined mattress or body pillow that raises the top half of your body like a hospital bed? Do they do help with OSA?

Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
It is more likely to help with GERD.
It may slightly lower AHI or pressure requirements, but this is only subjective--never been tested.
NO WAY is it a viable substitute for using CPAP.
Some use it in conjunction with CPAP therapy.

What froggy said.
I ended up in ER one time after I started cpap. Hooked up to monitors laying in bed at 45 degree angle - when i dozed off the alarms went off as my O2 dropped.
Some people can sleep in recliners and reduce their OSA.
I raise my bed to deal with my GERD.

Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
Not in my opinion.
We have a recliner, but within 10 minutes of falling asleep in it without CPAP, even when sitting up nearly upright, I will have a full-blown obstructive apnea, often with reflux. So being upright doesn't help with either, IMHO (I think my reflux is definitely that "vacuum" effect of struggling to breath during the obstructive event).
I have to make an effort NOT to fall asleep while watching TV in the recliner--I keep my hands busy with knitting or playing games on my phone. If I know I might fall asleep watching TV, I watch in the bed, with my CPAP on.

I've tried it without any demonstrable change.

Sleeping on a wedge helps my sinuses but seems to have no effect on my OSA.

Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
I've been sleeping on an inclined bed for something like 10 years plus because my wife was suffering from GERD. My OSA was diagnosed about 3 1/2 years ago, so obviously the inclined bed did not prevent its development. I'm inclined (punny, right?) to think that raising the bed will help very little, if at any all, to alleviate OSA.barrybd wrote:Just curious if anyone has tried an inclined mattress or body pillow that raises the top half of your body like a hospital bed? Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
Thanks all! I had been wondering about this since many of the manufacturers of these "Incline Mattress Toppers" advertise that they help with sleep apnea. I am looking for ways to get my AHI numbers down, but I guess I will save my money on this one.

Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
I sleep most of the night in a recliner due to back problems.
But since I do recline about 3/4 of the way, it is almost like sleeping on your back & my APAP pressure will often go all the way up to 20. No surprise here to anyone I am sure.
Sleeping in the bed on an inclined wedge DOES keep my max pressure closer to 16 or so. The wedge keeps me more upright than reclining in the recliner. But, it is much more uncomfortable to me than the recliner, so I seldom use it.
Sleeping in the bed on my sides keeps my max pressure closer to 14 or so, but I can tolerate that no more than a couple of hours. So I usually go from the recliner to the bed in the last couple of hours of the night, just to get some variation.
I now own 2 S9 AutoSets & keep 1 at my recliner & 1 at the bed.
Both run 100% in the APAP mode with a Min of 13 & Max of 20 to give me the least pressure required but also to give me the additional pressure when I need it.

Re: Do Inclined Mattresses Help with OSA?
I would like to see an adjustable bed with an option of raising the whole bed at an angle not just the head portion. IE equivalent to putting some books under the headboard feet
If i do just the head portion and then try to sleep on my side it is not very comfortable.
I don't understand why they haven't thought of this yet.

Can you cite the mattress topper company that claims to help with apnea?
It is a federal offence to make unsubstantiated medical claims--somebody deserves a stiff fine!
