Is my "new" machine used?

Post by KimberlyM » Tue Dec 24, 2013 1:43 pm

I just got a "new" ResMed S9 to replace my old one and noticed that the plastic lid on the humidifier and the plastic cover of the readout side of the S9 is scratched. When I got my last one new, it had plastic covers over those areas that could be peeled off. I looked and the machine has 270 run hours and the firmware is 903. It doesn't show any hours of use for days/months/year. For year it says 1/244. Is this a used machine or a demo maybe? There is no SD card in the machine. I paid for a new machine and would like to ensure I get one. That might tell me something also. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like a demo....you definitely deserve an explanation from the place that you bought it...and an SD card.

Sounds more like a return to me. I'd REFUSE to accept any but a NEW one because "the previous user may have DIED!"

Demo or used it's still a used machine with 270 run hours. I take it back and tell them you paid for a new machine and that's what you expect is a new machine with 0 run hours.

Take it back. Do NOT accept a USED machine.

And while you are at it, make sure the new machine has the newer updated internal software version which is currently ???

Version 0903 is AT LEAST 2 versions less current than whatever the current version is.

First one I got had over 1500 hours on it. Took an act of congress just to get it exchanged. My current had 110 hours and the 907 system.

It still whistles and sounds like a flock of doves, but hey, my insurance says they will replace or repair, their option. I know they wouldn't let you go until 5 years before they give you or replace a broken CPAP.

I remember a discussion from about a year ago where someone in the sleep profession stated that CPAP machines can legally be refurbished by the manufacturer and only the manufacturer can reset the run hours back to zero. On the other hand, they must clearly package the machine as refurbished. If that is true, what is to stop some dishonest DME or internet provider from taking the refurbished machine out of the original refurbishing packaging and just sticking in a box or plastic bag... or worse still into some new packaging that they've been storing from the last person who was lucky enough to actually get new machine. How many people would catch that if the machine wasn't scratched up???

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

If I hadn't noticed that they didn't peel off the thin layer of plastic that goes over the view areas, I might not have looked closer for scratches and then looked at the run hours and firmware. You are definitely correct. My husband wouldn't have looked at it that closely. I looked at his machine that is a little over a year old and the firmware is 905, so this machine, with firmware of 903 is probably at least 1.5 to 2 years old and sold to me as new for full price.

I have an AutoSet that will be 2 years old at the end of December (2013) that has the 0903 version. As I recall, when I forced an exchange for that 0903 version from an 0602 version, the 0903 version had been out for 3 months or more at that time. So an 0903 version is at least 2 years, 3 months old OR even 2 1/2 years old.

Thank you! That is very good information to know!

I too have experienced receiving a machine that had a bunch of usage hours on it. Several years ago ( 8 or so ) I got a Respironics BiPAP that had about 2000 hours on it although it was free of any damage or scratches. When I complained I was given a factory fresh sealed box machine. My real concern was that the 2000 hours represented about a years usage and obviously shortened its useful life. I suspect that DME's often re-issue machines that were used and turned back in when the customer didn't adapt to using XPAP.

I also "suspect" that they are trying to get over on people who are unaware, while they make money hand over fist.
