Oracle 452 oral mask

Post by DJL » Sat Dec 21, 2013 12:17 pm

I stopped using CPAP about 3 months ago because of sinus pain due to various surgeries. The ENT Surgeon said that the CPAP machine usually blows the air into the lungs and on the way out it can go into the sinus cavities, but most of my sinus turbinates were removed and so the CPAP air was going straight into the sinus cavities and this was causing the pain.

A week ago I got my old Resmed S8 auto (had a S9 before) and also found a Oracle oral mask which I used for a few days after my last sinus surgery 2 years ago. I wanted to try the CPAP again because I was still having some morning headaches. I set the pressure at 6-12 cm which is the pressure I was using with my nasal pillows.
With the oral mask I am using the nasal plugs which are supposed to help to train your breathing through the mouth. After 2 weeks the manufacturer says that you can stop using them. My problem is that I am waking up every hour or so, last night I think I may have found the problem, which is that suddenly I am finding it hard to swallow. Does anyone know what could be causing this, could the nasal plugs be causing some kind of back pressure/vacuum (I have the EPR set at 2). I know I could just stop using the nasal plugs, but I want to try to keep using them to make sure that I do train myself to breath through my mouth.

Are there any other good oral mask which people have found to work.

Thanks Dave

The Oracle is the only oral mask of this particular type with the mouth piece thing being the main part that I can think of.
In the past it was speculated as to whether one could mimic the Oracle by using one of the Hybrids but instead of allowing air flow through the nasal pillows into the nose...plug up the nasal pillows so that all air is going to the oral interface only.
Don't remember if anyone ever actually did try it or not.

Sorry, but other than remembering that one little speculation about the Hybrid...I am zero help with the Oracle. Never even seen one up close.

He'll probably be along soon but no harm sending him a PM. He's pretty friendly.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Hi DJL:

Please read my post on using the Oracle 2 mask.
That should get you going in the right direction.
The link is at the bottom of this message.
Then get back to me and we'll see if we can work out what you need to do.

There is only one oral mask and you have it.
I didn't see the post where it was suggested to modify a hybrid to only use the oral interface so I don't have any feeling as to whether that would work or not.

The nasal plugs that come with the mask are really uncomfortable for most folks but they do work for some.
It took me a while to learn how to not have my nasal passages open and so not need the nose clips that I eventually found.I haven't used the nose clips in over two years.

BTW what pressures are you using? Higher pressures require a slightly different approach. My machine frequently pops up to 25 cm H20 and I don't have any leaks at all - so it is possible. When it does that, my inhale presssure is 25 cm H2O and my exhale pressure is 10 cm H2O. If it does that when I am in transition going to sleep, it's quite a ride.

Cheers,
JDS74
