Why do I want a new APAP?
Why do I want a new APAP?
All of the sudden, I want a new machine. Other than wanting to have a back-up (which is important to me as I don't go a night without CPAP), I really don't have an excuse.
I've been using my M-series for the last 4 years with fantastic results. It's working fine. Besides the heated humidifier tubing (which I don't need), what do the new machines do that mine doesn't?

Hi millich,
I used an M-Series machine briefly, and found it noisier than the PRS1 machines.
I don't think the M-series reports CA and OA separately, if you like looking at data. M-series does not show breath-by-breath waveforms (Resmed S9 Autoset and PRS1 Auto do).

It's Christmas! You're itching to spend... but don't want to do it on frippery so think you should have a new machine . I really empathize with the spending thing, though not the machine part. Maybe you've been reading about everyone else's new machines recently?

I thought the same but then I saw one on sale here and bought it. I found out my pressure should be higher when I trialed it with my pressure as the minimum. So happy with my purchase!millich wrote:All of the sudden, I want a new machine. Re: Why do I want a new APAP?
Most insurances (including Medicare) require that your present machine be at least 5 years old. Some ADDITIONALLY require that your present machine no longer operate.
So, you would probably be looking to buy this new machine on your own dime.
If it were "me" and I had to have a "backup" right now, I would buy a used one.
But, "my" 1st choice would be to hold out until your present machine is 5 years old. That way you could get a newer model & keep your present machine as a backup.
By then, there may be even newer models that have come out.
The ResMed S9 Series has been out for a while & "may" be due for a new model soon (although no one can know that for sure).
Respironics has some recently released newer models already, so if you are thinking of staying with that manufacturer, you could pick one of those.

Re: Why do I want a new APAP?
Machine envy syndrome...caused by the sleep apnea virus...
symptoms...wanting something new or different..maybe a curiosity itch that needs to be scratched... I have had many such itches.
And in fact having the itch right now but have the "new" machine on its way to scratch that itch.
Symptom..we try to rationalize the "want" or "itch" by saying we want the additional data that the new machines offer..or in my case the heated hose that I really need and like...or I just wonder the "what does it feel like"
This 5 year thing...Medicare is going away from that and I suspect that it won't be long before our 5 or 6 or 7 year old machines won't be replaced so easily unless they are broken and beyond repair. When this happens I expect that other private insurance will follow in short order.
My thoughts...if I want it...that's good enough reason. Everyone should have a backup machine though...that way it won't ever be needed. That's the way Murphy's law works. If you have the maybe need covered it unlikely that you will have the need.
I used a M series machine...my first machine. The lure of the additional data available on the PR S1 models sucked me in...wasn't hard to get sucked in. My M series machine was really quiet so I couldn't even use the "noise" excuse. I am a data hound and even if I don't download every day or maybe even every week or month...I like having everything available just in case I ever need or want it. Remember...I think that "I want" is sufficient excuse to get what I want. Did I need the added data that was available..no not really but I wanted it.
Even if you don't need the heated hose itself..these newer machines with the heated hose offer greater customization of the humidity that is delivered...so it isn't all about the heat itself...it can be about the humidity delivered.
I happen to need the heated hose in the winter...I like lots of added moisture plus a cold bedroom and that combination pretty much guarantees a lot of rain out.
That itch.. I have a S9 VPAP Adapt ASV on its way to me...no I don't need it..I already have 2 machines but I don't have this one and I have been just itching to try one and I have never tried this model.
I may end up selling one of my machines...never know what I might do.

Not many unless there is another miracle which I don't expect.
Hey, maybe it will transform me into a morning person which I have never ever been.
That would be a REAL miracle.

Re: Why do I want a new APAP?
Do they do that much more? Heck no. The humidifier is slightly better on the new machines, with humidity sensors, that's true. But is it worth spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars? When the newest generation machines still have pretty glaring problems and design omissions of their own (this board is full of complaints about them all....). 2014 is upon us and yet, only one machine even has a clock display and alarm.... Perfection still awaits us.millich wrote:All of the sudden, I want a new machine. If you want to treat yourself, buy a nice shiny new mask cushion and then take the hundreds of dollars you would have spent on a marginally better new machine, and donate the money to the KIND fund, or to the Salvation Army, or Amvets, or a charity that helps uninsured apnea patients. Or buy some nice Apple stock for your own IRA and make Suze Orman smile.
That will make you feel a lot better than the inevitable disappointment you will feel if you drop hundreds of dollars on a box that does pretty much the same thing as the very good machine you currently use. And no, the 'back up machine' is just a subconscious excuse for justifying 'I want'.
The question is really 'do I NEED'?
Start looking after year 5 -- then perhaps the choices on the market will actually be much more worth switching over.

Re: Why do I want a new APAP?
Why not. A backup machine is a necessity. You never know when something will spill on your machine and kill it. (like a cup of coffee ).
It is also true that once you have a backup you won't need it.
I keep a PRS1 in the car just in case I'm stranded somewhere for the night.
The Intellipap? well, it works with DC and AC so it is a must when the power might go out.
And of course the S9 just because they say it is silent.
All excuses to purchase new, different machines. Are they better? not really. The S9 is just about silent, but really not noticeably
quieter than the intellipap, but then it's fun to try new things, and especially if you don't have a backup and have the money, why not!
Have fun with it.

Thanks all for the responses. The AWARDS are in:
The Funniest Response Awards:
Pugsy for the response about the sleepy virus causing machine envy
Sleepy B for admitting to spilling a cup of coffee on hers
The Most Shocking Award:
StuUnderPressure - I had no idea that Medicare (and therefore United) would only pay for a machine every 5 years.
The Best Rationalization Awards:
SleepyB for saying a backup was good idea in case of spilling coffee on it
SleepyCPAP for justifying it by noise level and waveforms
BlackSpinner for justifying it by possible pressure inaccuracy
Pugsy for listing advantages of the S1
The Unfortunately True Award
Julie for saying that Christmas causes the desire to spend
The Most Guilt Inducing Award
Hyperlexis for saying I should give the money to charity (and you are right).
Thanks again for your responses!

When was the Resmed S9 series first delivered?
When was the Respironics System One first delivered?
I'm assuming that those are their top of the line models.
If not, please correct me.

Just last year with the 60 series models.xyz wrote:When was the Respironics System One first delivered?
50 series was in winter 2009/2010 with the bulk of the models in 2010. It was right at the end of 2009 that the first 50 series APAP was released.
I doubt we will be seeing any major model changes anytime soon from Respironics.
Unsure when the S9 was released..sometime in 2010 I think it was. I don't think it was available yet when the first PR S1 came out.
I haven't heard anything about a major new model but then they keep pretty closed lips on what they are up to.
