Can an ASV machine work as an APAP?

Post by Zzzzzzzzzzz... » Fri Dec 06, 2013 9:50 am

Quick question… does anyone know whether or not a PR System 1 ASV Advanced can run in APAP mode? I don't think there's a built in modality for it and was wondering how I'd set it to operate from 8cm to 10cm without the rest of the bells and whistles. I assume turn off the back up function, but what about epap, ipap, max and mins, etc? Set all maxes to 10 and all mins to 8? I've been using a Respironics DS560 APAP unit (off ASV as of late) and for some reason it's whistling and buzzing on every inhale and exhale and driving me CRAZY. I need to find a solution in the meantime.

Thanks,

Z

Short answer ... No.

Longer answer ... The S9 VPAP Adapt does allow you to set CPAP mode, but not APAP mode. The PR S1 Auto SV Advanced does NOT appear to have a CPAP option (at least per my read through the clinician's manaual).

Even Longer Answer ... You can make the PR S1 Auto SV Advanced unit (and the later S9 ASV unit) act as if it's an Auto BiLevel machine. You should set the EPAPmin and EPAPmax to the values you want and then make certain PSmin and PSmax were the same.

But a caution. The ASV units have a habit of beeping .. a lot .. While it's a pain in the neck it's better than having a morning headache. Some of the alarms you can disable. Some can not be disabled.

In other words .. TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch) !!

Thanks John... sounds like more fiddling than it might be worth... including guessing at psmin and max settings... hopefully I can get the APAP machine fixed and turned around rather quickly.

MinEPAP: 8
MaxEPAP: 10
MinPS: 0
MaxPS: 0
MaxPress: 10

These settings (assuming the new PR1 has them) might get you close to what you're looking for, at least until you can fix and/or replace your APAP.

Try it during the day or weekend and see how it goes....keep your old machine handy in case this doesn't work out for you.

John, I noticed a about a month age that my S9 Adapt ASV 36007 beeped twice, very quickly and quietly, making me think that maybe I dreamed it. Then it happened again a few nights ago. I'm pretty sure I've got all the various alarms turned off, so do you think it was a glitch or an possibly an audible error code When I leaned over and check the LCD there was just the normal temp screen etc.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Unfortunately, that's one of the problems I've had with the Respironics units. They will beep to tell you something, but won't "lock in" the cause of the beep on the screen. I had that happening to me at one point. I found that I had to have it in the bed with me to allow me to catch it quickly enough. Turned out to be actually three then two beeps and the display indicated a low pressure alarm - my mask was leaking more than acceptable.

I wish I could offer greater insight into how to find these alarms, but then they are so transient, it's really hard to find out what is happening.

Since I can't see any error codes when my S9 Adapt ASV beeps and it seems to be working fine, I just got some silicone moldable earplugs to block out the low volume beeps because they tend to wake me up. A low tech solution for a high tech problem. Yet another thing to stick on and in my head.

The low pressure alarm can be turned off, but I'm not sure why you're on ASV so I wouldn't want to be telling you to do that. I'd really speak to your doctor or provider because that just sounds annoying and not needed!!
