College? Really?
Correct, "Those that can do, Those that can't teach, facts that they were taught by those that can't or wouldn't"
November 18-22 is American Educator Week

Many states and counties will have a variety of activities to support educators and give the public an opportunity to learn more about our public school system. Here in Winston-Salem, the county schools have issued an open invitation for anyone in the community who would like to come in, observe the schools, meet teachers and students, and walk into classes, to do so between 9 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. today. This can be arranged any other time, aside from today, but it's an open invite today.

For those who issue blanket statements, such as the one above, if you are in the area, come in. You will assuredly see wonderful things going on, as well as things that may concern you or cause you to wonder. Rest assured, some things that go on in our schools concern us educators as well. We work hard to make it right. We are incredibly appreciative of the people in our communities who support us. That does not mean blanket approval of all we do. That means taking the time to observe, try to understand, ask questions if there are concerns, and make your opinion heard in a respectful way.

As a public school administrator, I personally would like to thank the countless dedicated guidance counselors, teachers, custodians, teacher assistants, food services personnel, administrators, and all others who support our kids. Actually, they are your kids, but that's how we look at it while they are here with us each day. That's why we do what we do.

What can you do to support or thank an educator today?

My best friend, who took a big time financial hit by retiring early as an elementary school teacher due to the impossible demands of the field would say to let teachers do what they do best which is to teach kids instead of burdening them with all the BS that has nothing do with education. And before anyone accuses her of being lazy, she was the teacher who the principal assigned the worse kids because she could handle them. She also felt that teachers should get raises based on merit and not seniority.

Actions speak louder than words as they say.

Thank you though for posting this topic as I don't mean for my cynicism to take away from your excellent intentions.

Teaching is a dirty, thankless job; and it is becoming even more so.
It would not have been a good fit for my temperament,
but I applaud those who have forged on to serve.

My wife is a "retired" school teacher for just that reason.
How can you teach children when you spend most of your day (& nights) doing useless beauracratic paperwork.

IMHO the Administrators are the ones who do NOT support their teachers.

They just take their marching orders from the School Board and even when they know those orders are wrong, they say NOTHING.

Job security seems to take a back seat to what is really best for "your" children.

Do something for the kids - support school choice.

Parents should be able to choose the school their children go to. Parents should choose which government school or which private, parochial or charter school.

I believe teachers in government schools are finally starting to rebel against Washington's centralized, one-size-fits all approach to education across a tremendously diverse culture and geography. End the U.S. Department of Education!

School control should be local.
