Dry eyes caused by air leak

Post by burghguy » Wed Nov 13, 2013 8:37 am

I wear a mask that covers most of my nose. It is a Comfort Gel small. Some nights (but not all) the mask leaks and blows air into my eyes. When that happens I awake with pain like my cornea has been torn and my vision is blurred for most of the day. I wonder if other people have this happen and what have they done to remedy the situation. I am thinking about taping my eyes shut or wearing some type of goggle, except I don't know if that will work with the mask. I am getting desperate. When this happens the pain is quite severe, but my eye heals by the next day, only to have it happen again at a later date.

Try to stop the leak by using a mask liner....that usually works.

What is a mask liner and where would I purchase it?

You can try out a home made one. Use a well washed cotton t-shirt, lay the mask on it and cut around it and cut a small hole for the inside, try it out and adjust the size.

It could also be that the mask is the wrong size or shape for your face. There are hundreds of different masks on the market. you have a 30 day trade in for most masks given by the manufacturers to DME's.

Finding the right mask is like finding the right shoes ( $300 shoes at that). You try them on and walk in them. Go back to your dme with your machine, a blanket and a pillow. Try on the masks while laying down it the full pressure - don't accept second best.

I have the same problem with my comfortgel full. I went so far as to get an eye doctor appointment and sent her a link to the onyix goggles suggested by some on this forum. She suggested that I use Refresh P. M. Lubricant eye ointment at night & Refresh Tears Lubricant eye drops during the day. Other than looking through the ointment while masking up (very hazy & blurry) I clean my eyes up upon waking & see fine. My eye doc promised to consult colleagues about nightly using goggles with my cpap mask for possible concerns about engendering an environment conducive to eye ailments.

Just go with the easy solution... Onyix goggles. Forty three bucks and they work great unless you have a FFM that is mounted very high on the bridge of your nose. PM me for any modifications that may be useful if find you have too much moisture building up. NOTE: People with very small faces say these goggles don't work for them - there is not a lot of adjustment provided which I hope the manufacturers address in the future.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
