Newbie, G'day

Post by AussieBloke » Fri Oct 25, 2013 5:16 am

Hi All,

Noobie but for a few weeks have been looking through the volumes of excellent info you guys have all contributed, fantastic!

Finally had a sleep test after my ever loving complained of my snoring and said I would occasionally inhale then ....... nothing 'till I finally "whooshed" out all that air. Tad scary we thought.
Sleep test was a night from hell (for me), even sat bolt upright at one stage having dreamt? I had ripped off all the leads, tubes, etc. and being amazed to find them all still in place. D'oh.
Test came back with main comments to my Doc being: Sleep Efficiency 85%, Sleep Latency of 5 min and AHI of 58
Off to the sleep clinician and they fitted me up to a trial / loan system (details hopefully show below) and I'm getting ready for night 4.

Night 1 I persisted for a few hours before I ripped it off my face, growled at the glowing, blowing machine now sitting beside the bed. Very grumpy next day.
Night 2 I lasted all night very disturbed sleep. My new machine mate told me I had slept for 7.5 hrs with an AHI of 8.5 & a green smiley mask indicator so I must have felt better?
Night 3 (last night) I ripped it off again after about an hour, put it back on & lasted 15min, put it back on and had another very disturbed sleep, but machine mate told me 6hrs sleep, AHI of 4.5 & green smiley mask again.
Find I'm clenching my jaw for some odd reason but all up sounds like I'm have a dream run (ha ha) compared to some people.
Can see from the basic info from my new machine mate that he is doing his job but am now getting interested in reviewing the full details with Sleepyhead or Resmed software before I head back for my weekly review.
Have checked things like Pugsy's Pointers and delved into the clinicians menu to ensure all the data is being captured so software review is a task for the weekend I guess.

Anyhow, that's enough typing for now. G'day to all and many thanks for all the marvellous info.

Welcome, and congratulations for being persistent.
It can be a tough critter to ride; but treat it well, and you will be friends before you know it.

Welcome Bloke!! Try some tape on your mask. Tape the edge on the mask and the other end on your face. That way, when you want to rip that mask off at night, you'll awaken. Use a mild surgical tape so it don't take hide off. Seems you are doing good and you're body is fighting back. You'll eventually win. Work all your issues here.

Sheriff - he's an Aussie, not a Limey, therefore not a bloke, but a mate!

Thanks folks, night 4 was better, hopefully I'm getting used to being strapped to my Res mate.

Just to clear up any confusion (or maybe create more), here in Oz we blokes call just about everyone mate.
ie, Went to the beach with my mate Jim or
G'day mate, what did you think of the opera on the weekend (jokes, we would never admit to going to the opera let alone ask someone about it)

Cheers

Welome to the forum AussieBloke,

Chances are you're just (unconsciously) over worried about the possibility of mouth breathing. As you get more used to sleeping wit your new sleep machine mate, that jaw should relax to its more normal sleeping position. If you've never been much of a mouth breather before, you most likely won't start mouth breathing now. If you start getting a lot of TMJ pain or tooth pain in the meantime, however, you may want to think about a mouth guard for providing a bit of protection. Here in the states you can find boil-n-bite guards for temporary use that will do if you're just dealing with a temporary problem.

I thought Aussies only said "g'day" to Americans because they think we expect it because we've all seen "Crocodile Dundee."

Nope we really do say it to each other. I don't say it as often as I used to.

G'day Aussiebloke from a Victorian. This site has been fantastic for me, so I hope you find this place as great as I do.
