My first night on VPAP

Post by jedimark » Mon Oct 14, 2013 11:42 pm

I'm breaking in a new machine after 2 and a half years on my PR System One Auto..

I have purchased a shiny new S9 VPAP auto, which is now sitting right next to my bed. Yay!

First try last night, and I love how easy these things make breathing, and the humidifier and climate-line combo is fantastic... But I didn't get a decent nights sleep, not due to any problems with the machine. It was another annoying night with periodic breathing clusters (which I've had previously on the PRS1 auto plenty of times) I'm fairly sure some tweaking is going to be required, I've got to go have a chat with my local team up here for some advice..

This machine interestingly calls the events between my periodic breathing clusters Centrals, where the PRS1 is about half and half between Obstructive and Clear Airway events. These clusters always seem spaced about 90 minutes apart, which is consistent with REM cycles. Not sure if that means anything yet. I'm assuming it has something to do with either whacky CO2 levels, or hyperventilating during REM phases.. Haven't met a doc who can give me a straight answer yet.

Good news by the way, I found and fixed a very silly bug affecting the ResMed importer module, which has brought things a lot closer to releasing a new build. I'm currently trying to extract a little more information out of the STR.edf summary files, and then I've got a couple of issues to round off with the new automated oximetry import process. I'll have a build out for brave testers real soon, but first I want to be happy with the ResMed S9 stuff. It's going to be a lot easier having one of my very own at my fingertips.

Mark, I'm glad you're loving your shiny new S9 VPAP Auto. I have the same machine. Like you I found that it makes my breathing much easier. In my case, my IPAP is only a wee bit higher than my max pressure setting on my previous machine (S9 Autoset) and my PS is almost the same as the EPR setting I was using with my APAP. It basically looks like I'm using the same settings I used with my APAP machine, yet breathing is so much easier with the VPAP.

Sorry about the crummy first night of sleep.

hi there, I'm Donna, started on VPAP Adapt a few months now... moved from CPAP Auto S9. My EPAP pressures tend to be around 3 points lower than my IPAP pressures (ie EPAP 7-10, IPAP 9-12).

My mixed apnea is part of my dysautonomia associated with connective tissue disorder.
Any idea what caused your centrals?

warmly,

Donna

Hi,

Look on the bright side...at least you have some pretty clear data on your sleep structure, and you know you are getting 3 REM cycles.

Night 4 is starting to get a little more like it! I'm starting to get use to VPAP.

Having an early night for once probably helps
