Severe allergic reaction!

Post by Hinesks » Sun Oct 06, 2013 11:09 pm

Longtime CPAP user. The past couple days I have had all over body hives and itching. Yesterday after working all night and sleeping during the day, I woke up with my lips swollen with all the itching. I immediately went to my local urgent care was treated for anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). Of course everything is suspect for causing this reaction and I am just trying to narrow down the list. Has anyone ever had a anaphylaxis reaction to there mask or headgear? Thanks in advance for all the help you can supply.

IMO unless you changed your mask and headgear just before your allegeric reaction, I would say it isn't them. Has anything changed in your environment recently?

Added any medications? (I had a severe allergic reaction to Ambien.) Ingest anything unusual? It IS possible to eat something that you have eaten before, but this time have a reaction.

ANYone can develop an allergy to anyTHING on the planet at any time, whether or not they've previously eaten, played with, slept in/on/with whatever might cause the problem. You cannot assume anything without getting checked out, and should be carrying an EPIpen - emergency kit - at all times (have you been told to, if not ask about it), at least til you know what caused your reaction. It could have been something you SMELLED (up close and personal, like peanut butter), or touched, etc. You need to experiment now but always have the EPI pen handy.

Hi Hinesks,

Have you had similar type problems like this in the past or was this an isolated incident?

One food that comes to mind in particular is fish as I have heard of similar type of reactions. Did you eat any?

It is also possible to be allergic to the mask materials although I haven't heard of anybody having this extreme a reaction.

If you haven't done this already is you might want to keep a careful diary of everything that occurs and watch careful for any type of allergies that look like they are developing. I know it is a royal pain in the neck but for mysterious situations like this, it is unfortunately necessary.

Best of luck!

Well I have good news! It was not my CPAP. I have to admit it scared me that I could have a reaction that bad while I was sleeping. So I tested the mask theory by putting it on why watching tv and stayed awake for a couple hours to see if I has a reaction and I didn't. Going to my family Dr today to begin the search for answers.

Also you could be allergic to a certain combination of things. You could be not allergic to item 1 and item 2 but when used together, you're allergic. I hope you find the answer soon and sorry you had to go through that:(:(

I too had a severe reaction and had to go to hospital. My tongue swelled and the hospital kept me in all night. It has happened twice to me and each time, it is around 5:30 AM after I take off the mask. I am on heart medication but been on it for over 2 years. They are not sure what has caused it but it is a scarey thing. Have you found any answers?

It would be really bad to be allergic to clean air. Jim

Probably not the CPAP, but clean everything really well anyway.

If you're using something like dish soap to clean the CPAP, you might change the brand or type of cleaner. Change your air filters. Be sure there is nothing that might be irritating near the air inlet. Clean any dust away.
