Tap Pap - affect on teeth?

Post by Tigerlily » Wed Sep 25, 2013 12:46 pm

I know this question will probably sound silly, but...

Is there any chance that the Tap Pap mouth guard can make the teeth come loose after time? It's fits so tight that when I'm pulling it off in the morning it makes me wonder.

On a side note : I still have the original mouth piece and wondering if it would be wise to try out the new one? Is it less tight? Is it easier to keep your lips closed because it is thinner?

Tigerlily if you feel its a tad to tight, just run it under the hot water for a bit, put it back in you mouth and just wiggle it until its set enough to be snug but not tight. I would use the smaller of the two mouth guards as it is less on the teeth and roof of the mouth than the original one.
I re-did the boil thing to mine about 4 times before I got it right - keep trying you will get it so its just comfortable

The newer piece definitely is less stressful on teeth. I am not yet sure I like the newer piece as much ... it's slightly less stable for me.

As for removing it ... remember to reach in and pry it off the back teeth first. (I actually DON'T do that ... I push up on the front teeth and leverage the back loose, but it's the same idea.). If you try to pull it off from the front it feels like the jaw is going to go with it!

For whatever it's worth... and all mouths/teeth are different, my dentist said no on the Tap Pap. He said why take the chance of it messing with my teeth when there are so many other masks out there. He seems to think that down the road people will be sorry they used it.

Just saw my dentist today for regular exam and cleaning.
We discussed the Tap Pap. We talked about how the bite sort of feels when first removed and he said that is normal with any appliance.
I have more crowns in my upper teeth than I have "real" teeth. He didn't see a problem with using it. Said all my crowns are firmly seated and the rest of my teeth don't have any loose fillings or anything like that. Saw no problem with its use.

Hey Pugsy... do ya think your dentist and my dentist should talk?

Pugsy - glad to hear your dentist didn't see a problem with it. I think I will take it to my cleaning next month and ask his opinion as well.

As far as the hot water trick - I do that sometimes before use which does make it go on a bit easier, but removing it in the morning is still just as hard. I honestly don't want it to loosen my teeth over time. I do not pull it off the back teeth first, so I'll try that tomorrow. I just grab it near the canines and wiggle it off.

I think I made it too tight when I first got it because I sucked hard and bit down because I didn't want it to fall off. I had no idea how firmly it would fit compared to other tooth guards I've tried in the past.

I know I can boil and re-fit and that may make it not so tight, but I may just invest in the new one. My luck...they come out with a 3rd generation soon after.

I need a night guard due to bruxism, but I hate the bulkiness of even custom made guards. My dentist finally had one made for me out of "Invisilign" material. It's super thin and light weight and amazingly strong. I've worn it for two years and have not ground through it yet. Mine covers just the front six lower teeth. It does not affect the alignment of the teeth or pinch in any way. I love it!

Looks like my night guard of NINE years! Well, mine is a bit more opaque. With new dental crowns, this type of guard filed down for adjustments by your dentist. Although the initial investment is high, mine looks like it could last another decade.
