Machine needs a service?

Post by Stagger Lee » Fri Sep 20, 2013 11:50 pm

G'day

My Machine has started to stop a few times in the night followed by a few beeps then it starts up again -with me wide awake of course. I assume my machine needs a service so the questions are

What do they do when they service the machine?

Are there other faults that may cause my machine to just stop?
(machine plugs and power cords all good)

I have a system one bipap machine thats almost 3 years old and it has about 1100 hrs of service. It is shutting down during use. Sometimes it will restart itself but anymore it just sounds the alarm and shuts down. If I unplug the power, it will come on and it can be used for a short time before it alarms and shuts down again. So I don't know what goes bad in them that it triggers the shut down. Only thing I can think of is it might be out of calibration or the pressure sensors might me going bad causing it to be out of calibration. So has anyone had their machine go bad like this. The machine should display some error code or have an error log file in it so that you can see what is wrong with it. Respironics wants people to be idiots and not know why the machine is malfunctioning. Id be real curious if they even tell you what is wrong with it when its sent back for service. I am going to send mine back and see what they say. Its a damn shame that you pay sky prices for these things and you cant get 3 or more years service life on them before they go bad.

Some insurances will quickly allow for the replacement of a machine doing what your is doing. I dunno about the PR Warranty is. If you have a DME, then let them evaluate the machine, that is the first step to getting it replaced. You said nothing about what your insurance is. I do not know how to get one to work which is starting and stopping on its own. It think some machines can have a problem which can be fixed by unplugging it for a few minutes. But if the problem keeps recurring after that, then yes, you are right, it is replacement time.

In my opinion, it was always a fiction that these machines should last for five years before being replaced, (which used to be the Medicare standard, NOW Medicare requires the machine to be malfunctioning, even if five years old). OF course, yes a lot of machines do last more than five years.

Do you have the Auto Off function enabled? If so, I would try turning it off to see if it makes a difference.

Often fixing these machines costs more than a new machine would cost.
A 2009 model is of course out of warranty.
The most common cause of power off issues has been the power supply but of course it wouldn't be impossible for something in the machine itself to be dying. Do you get any error messages showing on the LCD screen that you have been able to catch?

Forum member STL Mark may still have a PR S1 560 machine (the current model compared to your 550) for sale. Brand new with humidifier and all the accessories $400 US...plus a little more for international shipping.

There is a place here in the US that works on ailing cpap machines but the cost of getting your machine here and back to you and the repairs is likely going to be real close to what you might be able to buy a new machine for.
Have you checked to see if there is a similar place in your area of the world that fixes these machines?

Error codes are logged on the SD card.
Someone on the forum figured out where they were and there may be a way to figure out what the codes represent if you can get it open.
Let me see if I can find that thread.

Edit: found one of them

One of my PRS1 machines has a very flaky connection where the power plugs into the back of the blower unit. Try wiggling that.

You might also try disconnecting the humidifier and replugging it or leaving it off.

Be sure the power brick is sitting somewhere it gets good airflow, not sitting on something like deep carpet, covered up, etc.

You could try replacing the power brick, but my gut feel is that that isn't it.

Try plugging into a different power outlet. Plug a lamp into the same outlet and see if there's any flickering. Maybe even run a cord into another room to get on a different circuit.
