what to do.....

Post by OutbackOzy » Mon May 15, 2006 11:50 pm

hi everyone, new to this and have spent a fair bit of time in here looking around. An overweight male about to turn 50 and diagnosed with mid to high range sleep apnea a year ago I tried a mouthguard first that I just couldn't swallow, if u know what I mean.
Anyway......would appreciate your advice.
Having read many of the posts I think I am ready to try a flash air compressor thingo.....daunting really, considering how many posts are just about comfort of masks etc but interesting considering the 1000hr user remarks......so here goes....
Do I go to the clinic again and get them to get my readings etc that are needed to go on to a machine......
or do I just go and buy one and with forum help etc control just do it?
if I did, because I camp out a bit and 12V option is important, I'd go for
GoodKnight 420E auto CPAP
Comfort Lite 2 mask (I have a moustache and beard)
software and cord (opt av with 420)
and then do I get carried away and get a GoodKnight 420 Series Intigrated Heated Humidifier, an Aussie heated hose and a full face mask in case I get blocked up?
this is scarier than asking for advice on your lovelife!!!!! but thanks in advance
Cheers

Hey OutbackOzy,

Where in OZ are you. Happy to help if I can.

You will need a prescription to buy a CPAP.
Have you had a sleep study?
You should have been twice.
Once to be diagnosed and once to check your mouthguard is working.
If you had chosen CPAP the second visit you would have been put on a CPAP machine and the Techs would workout what pressure you need.

You can pm me if you like (Message button top right)

Since you asked for recommendations . . . follow your gut instincts.

I'm assuming another sleep study will be expensive for you, even if it's covered by insurance which it may not be, seeing as how you recently had one done. With the results of your previous sleep study you shouldn't have much problem getting a prescription for a CPAP. Then simply get the machine and mask of your choice. Your selections are about as good as things get.

A sleep lab titration won't help you set the APAP, and may or may not help with mask selection. And even if it did help with mask selection, a sleep study titration is an awfully expensive mask fitting. IMHO, the most important criterion to success is determination. So long as you are determined you will be able to resolve the inevitable problems. If you don't have determination, then save your money and make the most of your remaining years before your health declines.

As countless victims have testified here, sleep professionals have been essentially useless for many of the problems experienced by most of us. I've been at this for nearly five months, continually making improvements, and I'm only recently at the point where I can sleep peacefully through the night many nights without needing to get up.

Best of luck.

Regards,
Bill

thanks guys...and yes peterau, have had one study done, all wired up etc at Smithfield....in the process of booking the second one, but wondering really if that's only to set up a pressure macine then why muck about and just go for the APAP type? seems most posts here on that favour APAP machines over CPAP...to such a point that the second night would just b delaying getting going (about a 3 month waiting list, even though i do have private insurance)...as for mask fittings....well....seems like everyone has many....
I know so little....the doctor though I know is entirely competent....hasn't the ways as this forum has to educate me....no doubt will be in the dark for a while yet too........

Ozy,

In my case you needed to do the second sleep over to get your prescription. It will tell you if CPAP or BiPAP is the way to go amongst a host of other things. Once you have the prescription what machine you use is pretty much up to you. The equipment supplier will set the machine up to your prescription. Most APAPs I am aware of can also be run in CPAP mode. 420E which is what I use and you are looking at can be. The second sleep over should give you the chance to try a number of masks as well. My Sleep lab had every mask known to man. Must have tried 6 or 7 before settling on the UMFF. I am a hay fever suffer and spend a lot of time breathing through my mouth hence the full face mask. Have fine tuned the setup on my 420 over the last month with the help of the very knowledgable and helpful people on this site.

Hang in there. From my experience moving onto CPAP was the best thing I have done in years. It has taken some time to get comfortable with the mask and the machine but the improvement in my health as be well worth the effect.
