AHI: 31,404.19 ?!?!!

Post by KIE » Sat Sep 07, 2013 4:57 pm

I am new to the forum, and I've only started using a CPAP two weeks ago, on 8/23/13. Throughout these weeks I've educated myself, largely through this forum...THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. I did download the SH software within a few days, and started to untangle the data that I now had access to. Everything appeared to be within their expected ranges, but two nights ago, I had one truly ugly night! I kept tossing and turning, feeling that I was suffocating, and constantly finding my face mask lying on the side of me, and my putting it back on. The hose acted like a Boa Constrictor all night by entwining me, and I expect being crunched-up under the covers much of the night. To get to the short of it, all the values for yesterday were skewed. AHI was valued at 31,404.19; and because of that the range of the X-axis on the AHI graph forced all the previous weeks of data to diminish to "0." I clicked "off" that session, in order to eliminate that screwy night. Will a very restless and active night play with the values, and should thus be ignored? Or do they spotlight important information that is a blinding warning sign? Last night was also very active, and the AHI was the second highest at 3.27, where I've been averaging 1.69 up till now. Can anyone explain to me how to treat evenings such as these, and if they are just "blips"?

That abnormally high AHI is a little bug in the SleepyHead software. If you were using Encore software it wouldn't be registering that high AHI. I can pretty much guarantee it.
You aren't the first to have a random weird night like that. It's a bug in SH and the 60 series machines...don't know why but Mark is working on it. It happens in the Windows SH version too.
It may really mess with your overall stats though...does it bug you enough that you want that night to totally disappear or has turning off that session eliminated it from the other statistics?

I can get you Encore software but it is Windows only software and won't work on a Mac unless you have a Windows environment.

Thanks Pugsy, I'll just ignore it. And yes, by just clicking to not recognize that session removed it from integrating into the statistics, so it's gone, but without erasing it because one could just turn the data back "on." Being a newbie takes a lot of background work before being encouraged enough to post a query to such a knowledgable group, without seeming such an ignoramus!

You have done extremely well for being a newbie if you figured out the turning off the session thing.
Don't be afraid to ask questions...someone else might have the same question as you and too afraid to ask.

Is there a non-destructive way to turn off the display of entire days? I cannot find it. I see the setting re: short sessions, etc. But I have about 10 days of CPAP use on a different machine that are "not going to count" toward my compliance, and I'm interested in turning off those days so they don't get included in my stats. Would be great to bring them back if I want to see how I've really done from the very first night using CPAP.

Try this.
Go to the left side where the statistics are..use the slider bar to go all the way down past the bottom statistics and click on the little green box to turn it red...that turns that session off. If you have more than one session in the night...turn both off.
Close SleepyHead...then reopen SleepyHead and I think that those night's you don't want included should be showing no data for those nights.
To have the data return...just go back and click on them to turn them green again...restart SH and they should be right there.
I just did it for last night's data...it worked for me.

Ouch.. That's one bug that needs to be buried ASAP.

I suspect think something other than short sessions is causing this, because sessions shorter than 5 minutes are ignored by SleepyHead by default.

The short session having larger AHI problem came about due to the way AHI is calculated: AHI is the sum of apnea+obstructive+hypopnea+clear airway events, divided by the (decimal) hours in a session.. Usually multiple sessions counts and times are summed together, so no adjustments are necessary but on a day where using the machine has been a struggle, SleepyHead is taking the short session, and dividing the count by less than a decimal hour (so dividing by < 1.0), so the AHI ends up being much larger, and needs to be scaled by the fraction of the hour. Which SleepyHead should in theory do correctly (unless my memory is totally fried, and I forgot to implement this).

I would like to look a zipped copy of the SD card if possible, so I can replicate the bug here and examine it in the debugger.
