Respironics 560P vs. ResMed s9 Elite

Post by Iowamv » Fri Sep 06, 2013 7:32 am

Last night was my first night with the s9 Elite. I noticed a couple of differences... have others found these too? Major caveat: I only owned the Respironics machine for 10 days before having to switch.

The s9 seems to magnify my breathing sounds a bit more, but for some reason the sounds seem louder only at the machine end of the tube. Not sure why that would be. The machine itself is very quiet (as was the 560P). I definitely got something of a mild Darth Vader sound on the machine end. And I got a bit of gentle whistling too.

When I take a breath, the pressure seems to increase toward the end of my inhaling (feels like a reverse "ramping" for each breath). That was definitely different, but I can get used to it. In fact, I slept pretty soundly once I got to sleep.

Otherwise, I slept well and my AHI was more than acceptable though a little higher than it was on the Respironics (.4 vs. .2). Most of that was CA. Maybe that'll settle down too, once I'm totally adjusted to the new one. I do think I'm going to like the s9.

Now if I can just get that ClimateLine to work, I'll be happy.

I constantly switch from cpap mode to autopap mode and vise versa. One morning, while in cpap mode, I too noticed the "Darth Vader" sound when breathing. By the way, I love the Darth Vader example... it's a perfect description of the sound... After poking around on my machine, I realized in the cpap mode (and probably with the S9 Elite models), the EPR inhale setting is on medium. I attributed this sound to the EPR inhale setting. The EPR is when a fixed pressure is delivered with optional Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR). EPR can help ease any discomfort that you experience when breathing out during treatment. I tried like heck to turn off the EPR inhale, but I couldn't... in the Cpap mode. It will allow you to turn it off in autopap mode. Look at your EPR inhale setting and see what it is. I bet that may be the sound you are hearing. The EPR will drop the pressure when you breath out and that may be the sound you are hearing.

That makes perfect sense, because my RT said she was going to turn that feature on (she said most people seemed to like that). I didn't even consider that it was the EPR that would make that sound.

Thanks for the help Sheriff-- I found a link to the manual that Pugsy posted about 2 weeks ago in another thread. When I was trying to get the ClimateLine to work last night I dove into those menus to change the setting for the climate controls.

This is an extremely helpful and useful site!

I really like my 560p but I've never had a s9 either. I found that a hose cozy and pad a cheek liners helped my darth vader breath sounds. I had to put my humidifier back on the machine also to quiet the sounds in the summer and run it in passover mode.
It was bothering my spouse more than me. Take care .
