Hot Water washing Weakens Nasal pillows ?

Post by DannyPh » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:30 am

I am using the Mirage Liberty Hybrid mask and the last two shipments of supplies I have noticed a decrease in the Quality of the Nasal Pillows and Mouth piece. They are so Thin and Flimsy that it is unreal. And then when I wash them in Hot water and Dish washing Liquid I find that it is almost Impossible to maintain a seal on the Nasal Pillows Regardless of How I adjust the straps. I was thinking that the How water washings weakens an already weak quality. Maybe if I just clean them with Citrus wipes daily and then discard them when they become impossible to use ( about a week--two weeks Maximum ) I have a couple sets that are from a while back when the quality was better. The recent one are paper thin and you can almost read thru them. That is how thin they are. I considered calling Resmed but then it would probably be Fruitless to call. I guess it is all about saving Money and Kicking Patient Care to the Curb.

Somewhere I think I read to use a water temp of 82 degrees, which is lukewarm. Since I decreased the water temperature, my pillows are lasting about a week longer.

I havent had that problem yet, but I am wondering where you got your pillows and if the packaging was sealed and if it said resmed on them.

Hi - the problem is the soap you're using - too harsh for the silicone. Try something like a baby shampoo with as few additives as possible (within reason).

I don't think it's the heat at all; I boiled several of my Swift FX pillows, and they are like NEW!

Actually, it's 86 degrees per ResMed product information:
"Cleaning your mask in the home:
Your mask and headgear should only be handwashed by gently rubbing in warm (approximately 86°F/30°C) water using mild soap. All components should be rinsed well with drinking quality water and allowed to air dry out of direct sunlight."

I agree that the culprit could be the soap. Use a Free (of fragrance) and Clear (of dyes) soap like Seventh Generation Free & Clear or many of this forum like Dawn.

yes, oak They are new sealed in Package and has resmed stamped on the Package and I get them from the Same DME I have used for the past six Years. It could possibly be the Soap I am using. I will try the Baby Shampoo and see if there is a difference. Thanks

I wash mine in the dishwasher with the hottest water setting I have, probably 140F or so. Washed every other week, I usually get over a week on a set. Normal dishwasher soap.
