OT Summer Rain on Memory Lane
We have had a lot of rain this summer. Today I started thinking about summer rain when I was a child. We didn't have air conditioning back then and it was one of life's greatest pleasures or so it seemed to me at the time. I hated coming in out of the rain and I got in trouble for playing out in it most the time. I thought Mom was just being mean but today I remembered she had to iron our clothes.

Re: OT Summer Rain.
A Child's View of Thunderstorms
A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that
morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily
trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up,
along with lightning. The mother of the little girl felt concerned that
her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school.
She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern,
the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's
school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along. At each flash of lightning,
the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lightning followed quickly and with each,
the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile. When the mother drew up beside
the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?" The child answered,
"I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture."
I just got this in an email. I just had to post it here.

Re: OT Summer Rain.
Sometimes the best part of thunderstorms was the show right before the waterworks.
The air would begin to smell of ozone, and cool breezes would stir.
We could see the thunderheads forming to the west; then they would start rolling in
--sometimes we would see the huge wall cloud, rolling in with lightning and thunder.

I lived in Central California for several years as a kid (6-10) where lightning storms are dry. I used to pile some inner tubes up on the front lawn and lie in them, watching the near-constant show we got from the electrical substation across the street. It's always amazed me how beautiful nature gets when at her most deadly.

I also loved feeling the rain through an open window by the head of my bed. It was worth getting yelled at for getting the window sills wet. Poor Mom.

Re: OT Summer Rain.
We spent many a week camping in the summers in the 60's with the family. I have good memories of sitting in the kitchen tent, trying to keep the plastic from blowing away and getting soaked. Playing cards with the family with the occasional drip of water down the back of the neck from the leaky roof. Putting on one damp pjs, adding some socks and sweaters before crawling into the damp sleeping bag.

Re: OT Summer Rain.
My son told me that he used to think that when we knew it was going to rain we packed up to go camping. I remember picking up those wet heavy sleeping bags full of water and letting them drain over the car for a while then driving to the Laundromat to dry them out before bedtime. When it rained we pretty much had the place to ourselves. : lol: All of my children still love to go camping. Fried potatoes with onions and sausage gravy made over a campfire and a pot of boiled coffee. No thoughts about our arteries then. All great memories. Even the time I decided to feed the skunks. I only did that once. We had never seen a skunk fight before but luckily they didn't spray.

Love the feel of sloshing barefoot in the grass when it was soggy after a hard summer rain. A favorite memory was the time when a downpour started and Dad told us to grab a bucket and some rags and we hurried and soaped up the car and let nature do the rinsing. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

The thing I loved best was toast done over the open fire, dripping with butter and jam, early in the morning huddled around the camp fire for warmth. Best thing ever - scorched smokey toast!Stormynights wrote: Fried potatoes with onions and sausage gravy made over a campfire and a pot of boiled coffee. No thoughts about our arteries then. .

Sorry to hear about your surgery but glad to hear you got fixed. Wishing you a speedy recovery so you will be back making more new memories for yourself and hopefully share them with us here. I guess a rainy summer is a good time for you to recoup.deerslayer wrote:Priceless those memories are !
