ASV Machine Information and Setup

Post by keirahudson » Fri Aug 09, 2013 9:27 am

After being misdiagnosed with OSA for 6 years and treated with CPAP machines which only made me worse, I was diagnosed with Cheyne-Stokes or Ataxic Breathing at the Mayo Clinic in December of 2011. I was prescribed a Respironics BiPAP autoSV Advanced RemStar System One (Model 950). The problem I had with it was that the max pressure was set to 25. Whenever I stopped breathing and it ramped the pressure up to 25, it would blow the mask right off my face. I lost my insurance shortly after the machine was prescribed and ended up on Disability because of problems caused by my untreated sleep disorder. The Mayo Clinic does not accept Medicare and I have been unable to find another doctor that is familiar with my machine to change the prescription for it. I finally found another BiPAP user who had the knowledge to step me through the process of changing the max pressure setting and I was able to use the machine for the first time last night without the mask blowing off my face. Because of limited Disability income and a lack of doctors that accept Medicare, I am going to be on my own "tweaking" my machine to optimize it in order to keep my breathing under control. Can anyone tell me where I can find out more detailed information on the items on the information display screen (AHI, Periodic Breathing, 90% EPAP, Average PS, etc.) so I know how well the machine is working for me? Also, does anyone know where I can find out more information on the parameters on the setup screen with the max pressure (EPAP min & max, PS min and max, BPM, and Ti)?

I think John Fisher (forum member) might be able to help - go to the PM screen and where it says 'find a member' (add. line) type in his name and hit 'add' to see the name come up in the box, then write your note and submit. The note will stay in the outbox til he picks it up.

I will send you a private message in a few minutes with some additional information...like software and where to get the provider/clinical manual for your machine which has some expanded definitions in it.

This may help a bit
EncoreGuide link this will show you examples of what you will see.
http://www.healthcare.philips.com/pwc_h ... _Guide.pdf

You may be able to use SleepyHead software...it's hit or miss with the 950 machine but worth a try.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sleepyhead/files/ make sure you get the version 0.9.3 files dated May 19, 2013.
See my signature for other useful hints on how to install and use SleepyHead.
There's also a glossary of terms and most were taken from the Respironics manual
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/s ... r_Glossary

For specifics on your own personal settings it would help if the ASV users on the forum had more details as to your exact settings as well as images of your software reports so that they can see what is going on.
So how to post images of your reports (once you have them) explained here.

Welcome to the forum... I will let the other forum members who know the ASV type of machines much better than me offer their own input in regards to your questions. I just thought I would give you the basics that might help you understand things a little better and get you started on the software so you can see up close how things are going. That information off the LCD screen is pretty limited.

The software that I mention is for Windows...if you have a Mac I don't know if the Mac version will work with the 950.. the 950 is a bit iffy when it comes to Sleepyhead and the Mac version even more iffy.

Look for a PM in a few minutes.

To get your clinical manual for your machine go here http://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-p ... tup-manual and scroll down to section 3 and under Philips Respironics yours will be the 9th one down under that listing Respironics PR System One BiPAP AutoSV Advanced. Scroll to the bottom where it say's HOW TO ASK FOR A MANUAL VIA EMAIL: and follow the instructions.

The backup rate is the number of times per minute that the ASV unit will insist that you breathe. I recommend that you leave it on AUTO to allow the unit to adjust to your breathing as it changes during the night.
