BiPap humidifier problem?

Post by Vampira » Thu Aug 01, 2013 7:30 pm

I am using my new Respironics PR System One REMstar 60 BiPap Pro w/Bi=flex and the humidifier that connects to it. I follow the instructions which tell me to hold down the control knob for five seconds until it beeps (my unit must be on silent setting) and the wavy symbol illuminates in blue.
The humidifier indicator/light does come on. The unit feels warm to the touch after a few minutes and seems to be working. What I don't understand is why the tank is just stone cold by the morning and seems to have used very little of the distilled water? It seems like I got the humidification overnight, but I am puzzled by it being so cold the next morning. I don't feel all dried out. I thought it would stay warm most of the night. I couldn't find a lot of info about it in the manuals.
Maybe I am just forgetting to check something obvious - the unit seems connected tight, plugs and cords OK. Am I using it right? Maybe that is how it is.
Does anyone have any experience similar to mine or think it's normal? I got that BiPAP 3 months ago, and you'd have to pry it outta my cold, dead hands to give it up! Best relief I've had in the 10 years I have used a CPAP.

I have same thing but my DME told me it was because I have it on a low setting and in the South we have so much humidity. It will only use what it needs.

This has been discussed often and what you are experiencing isn't all that unusual.
The PR System One has a humidification system based on analysis of the ambient room humidity and the heating cycles can and will be intermittent throughout the night and if you happen to be in an area where the ambient humidity is already fairly high the machine won't sense the need to add much moisture to the air at all.

I use the same machine and humidifier...I max the setting out and some nights I use almost all the water and some night it barely uses any water at all. The night's where it doesn't use much, if any, water are usually when I have slept with the window open and the humidity is fairly high....like raining sometimes.

I don't know what setting you are using but the lower the setting the less water you will use anyway...add in the fact that if you are in an area where the humidity is already a bit high...it might not use any water at all.

Wow! That makes sense.
I have it on 2 and it's been humid as heck. Usually the bedroom is ice-cold with A/C and a fan most of the time.
I'm impressed with how high-tech that machine really is!

Thank you!

That is a great machine. I've been using too much water evidently, and it's doing a good job on it's own. Anything higher than a setting of 2 gives me rainout.
Thanks again for all the info - easier than thumbing through manuals and getting confused.

If you need or want more moisture at some time and rain out is a problem there is a heated hose available for the 60 series machine.
I assume you probably don't have it already as it is an added cost option.
The machine's power supply has to be increased and there's a new lid for the humidifier and the heated hose.
I got one for my machine..it's easy to apply it and the cost is $75 for the whole upgrade kit.

This allows for more customization of the amount of humidity delivered and the air temp going to your face and greatly reduces the chances of rain out even at higher humidity settings.
It isn't that big of a deal right now but in the winter it will be well worth it. I like lots of added moisture and a cold bedroom...and that's a perfect recipe for lots of rain out.
