Finding the right nasal pillow

Post by bkkjames » Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:52 am

I just got started with CPAP a week ago and have been trying out a number of masks. I am reasonably happy with the Mirage FX nasal mask, but I think there is potential for me to like nasal pillows better. I started with the Swift FX, but I find the outer rim of the pillow pushes uncomfortably into the top of the upper lip just under the nostril opening. I also have the TAP PAP, which doesn't seem to have this problem, but I am not sure I will be able to get used to the mouthpiece (although I will give it more of chance in due course). Is there any other model I should try?

Unfortunately I am in the US only for a few more days, and when i get back to Thailand, it becomes much more difficult and expensive to order new masks.

Take a look at the Aloha nasal pillow mask. The barrel of the pillow is not quite as large as the Swift FX and there is also a little angle adjustment available.

Hi bkkjames,

You might also look at the Opus 360:

The lower part of the nasal piece is angled away from the upper lip and gives pretty good clearance. I have mustache/goatee and the angle is enough that the nasal piece doesn't brush against the mustache. Check the profile:

Is the Tap Pap mouthpiece the new one? Is there molded material on the inside of the front two teeth? They changed the design and the new one is much more comfortable and uses lots less material, including thinner walls and no material behind the front two teeth.

I believe I have the new mouthpiece. I haven't tried it properly yet - I am still struggling with the idea of having something in my mouth all night.

I will try the Aloha and Opus 360. Thanks for the suggestions,

I have an overactive gag reflex, and I had the same concern. When I first put it in my mouth (the larger, original version), I did have to talk my way through it. Once it was molded to my teeth, it was okay. Molding it is the hardest part.

I've been using it since March with no problems, though occasionally I find myself drooling. Fortunately no leaks though.
