Did I just screw everything up? Help me please! ASV unit

Post by sleepinow » Sat Jul 27, 2013 2:51 am

Okay so tonight I wanted to try something new. Since my previous setting 5.0 did not tackle all of my hypopneas to the point that I liked it, i wanted to raise the pressure by just 0.5. After doing so and trying to fall asleep I went into a state of panic and didnt know why. (It was probably because of the new setting)

Falling asleep was hard and now I am having trouble once again staying asleep.

Question is, does changing a setting on an ASV unit by even as little as .5 cause such a state of craziness?

Oh and what scares me more is that after looking on my machine after waking up, the darn pressure displayed a 4.5. How is that even possible!?

Will this new setting take 3 goddamn months to get used to? Or maybe around a week? At first I didnt even think I would need to really adjust. But now I am pissed off so should I stick with it or go back to my previous setting

(No one told me changing a pressure even gradually can be such a full time ultra stressful job)

Oh I was going to say sorry for the bad language. But screw it, bad language is needed at times like these. I may sound like a total jerk though. And for that I am sorry

You probably won't get any useful replies until tomorrow sometime.

There are very few people on this forum who use an asv machine. It was mentioned on another topic that ASV machines take longer to get used to than normal machines, so those of us who have never used one can't really give you a helpful answer.

I did not sleep with an ASV last night because I don't own one. However, I do know that there are many variables in any xpap treatment that make it impossible to tell from one night whether you messed things up or if it is any one of those other factors. The 1st rule of "fiddling" is to make the change very small, and if it doesn't work out go back to the original setting. You will then know one thing that probably doesn't work. There is absolutely no need to panic. Of course that assumes you can remember how to reverse your change! If you can't, post back here but be patient in expecting a response. Especially at the weekend.

You might want to PM John B Fisher as he is very experienced with ASV machines and the difficult adjustments for those who are using them.

Good luck, hang in there and don't give up!!

sleepinow,

I'll try to fill in until the real experts get here.

This happened to me once with my ResMed ASV and it turned out that I had inadvertently flipped my mode from ASV to CPAP. Does your Respironics ASV unit have modes too? Check and see if that might be the problem.

Also, you say you meant to add .05 to 5.0 but now it is set to 4.5 - if so, could you have simply reduced your pressure when you meant to increase it? Did you feel like you were suffocating from inadequate air delivery?

Best wishes, Nate

I did not reduce the pressure because after turning it off and then turning it back on it went to 5.5. And yes I did feel like I was suffocating. It is also the reason why I increased pressure by .5

And I do not believe I changed it to cpap because when I did stop breathing I felt the surge of air come in which actually woke me back up this morning

Greetings .. If bumping it up by .5 caused so much problem .. try setting it back to 5.0 from 5.5. However, I suspect this one was more an anxiety issue than a real issue .. you worried it would cause problems so you had problems falling asleep.

Alternatively, you might want to start the ramp at 5.0 and have the ramp last for 30 minutes or so ... Hope that helps.

I will give it a few days. About how lobg does it take to get used to a different pressure. I am sure that it usually is not instantly and since I am still relatively a beginner user of asv

I'm pretty sure that this depends on you...I've made small changes in the pressure on my machine many times (it's an apap, not an asv though), and lost no sleep over it *smile*, so it really depends on you. Just give it time, and don't stress over it, just go about your normal life and sleeping routine, and you'll get used to the change.

Like I said, you can use the ramp feature to make it easier to adjust to the pressure change. Set the starting pressure for the ramp at your old setting .. that way you won't notice any change. By the time the pressure changes, you should already be asleep.
