Same machine - different mask?

Post by adelaideasleep » Wed Jul 10, 2013 9:58 pm

On the S9 Autoset if you change a mask you have to change mask type setting if the mask is a different style. My question: Does anyone know what that setting does?
Does it simply compensate for leaks?
Does it some how affect the way the machine records and interprets AHI?

I put a pillow mask on and sat for 23 minutes and was fully awake and the AHI returned for the 23 minutes was 18.9 ?????

The leak rate was excellent as in none.

The mask isn't a Resmed mask so could that make a difference?

The mask selection has to do with the "Pressure vs. Flow Rates". There are charts available to download on the ResMed site and in each mask user's guide.

Many people use different equipment manufacturers products interchangeably. I use a ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask with a Respironics CPAP machine.

With such a short time on the mask, one or two events could account for a high AHI. If those events are stretched out over a much longer period, the AHI is much lower.

When we are awake, we tend to hold our breath and have erratic breathing. The machine doesn't know you are awake, so it scores like it normally does, even though it is programmed for a more consistent type of breathing.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

The "mask-type" setting on Resmeds also pertains to the vent rates on different masks and how the machine calculates vent rates vs leak rates.
