CPAP.COM Question

Post by birdygirl38 » Tue Jul 09, 2013 7:42 pm

Does CPAP.com require a doctor's prescription in order for me to order a mask? I am getting so frustrated with the DME's in my area. The one who serviced my account for 6 months apparently is no longer allowed to supply CPAP supplies. Having trouble getting my supplies ordered and I am already overdue. The old supplier gave me a new one who is in my health plan list, but the new one doesn't have any of my info and the old one is just not getting it there fast enough. The old one also said the new one might require a new sleep study and/or a new prescription from my doctor. My doctor said they should only need the sleep study and not a prescription the last time I called her. I have only been on CPAP since November 2012 so the study isn't even a year old yet and I don't want to do it again so soon.
I would just love to buy an OPUS 360 nasal pillow mask to try or a Wisp Nasal as it seems smaller and maybe wouldn't be poking me in the eyes. Any tips or info would be helpful?

Yes a RX is needed to purchase the full complete mask setup package from cpap.com (or pretty much any online retailer).
If you have a copy of yours..you can fax it to them. If you don't have a copy they have a form where they will send a RX request to your doctor.

You can purchase replacement mask parts without a RX though...so often you can buy the replacement parts and build your own mask and skip the RX requirement.
Down side to that option with cpap.com is that if a full mask package is bought the option to purchase return insurance is not available unless the whole setup is purchased. Replacement parts building your own mask doesn't count.
Return insurance is helpful on the pocketbook...if you hate it you can return it and get your money back and all you are out is the cost of the return insurance (which varies by mask). Some masks come with free return insurance because the manufacturer offers the 30 day return offer. Like the Tap Pap that I use and the SleepWeaver masks.

Sometimes replacement mask parts can be found on EBay...normally just the most commonly used ones though. Of course no returns on those but sometimes the price is so good it doesn't hurt so bad.
The Swift FX is offered often...not sure about the Opus 360 and I am pretty sure the Wisp isn't....again we just buy the replacement parts and build our own mask because EBay prohibits the sale of anything requiring the RX.

Cpap.com will require a prescription to purchase a mask.... but... you can order the "parts" without one . They will also help you out by sending your doctor a fax to get him/her to sign a form that is basically a prescription. I would go to the dme and demand that they give you a copy of it, it is yours to have, it is part of your medical records which you are entitled to have. I got mine from my the dme by telling them I was moving and needed it in my new city (white lie) and then made several copies of it for my records. One I sent to cpap.com, the other I keep in my wallet along with my glasses rx. I also keep one with my cpap machine for when I am traveling... just in case.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Ask Carolyn Goodman (on this forum as "carolyngoodman") to send you a pdf of the prescription form. (Oops. Found it here.) Check out the details about prescriptions for cpap.com here. Email or print it out and drop it off to your doctor and ask them to scan and pdf it back to CPAP.com. Ask them for the original back so you can keep a copy too. There's a strategy to filling out the form so you can get your preferred machine, masks, hoses, etc., so ask about that. When you order, check the box so that you will get a prefilled insurance form that you can send to your insurance company for direct reimbursal to you, since CPAP.com doesn't handle insurance.

Go to their "FAQ Learning Center" (under "Assistance" ) and then select "Prescriptions".

If you have a prescription for your machine, that should be sufficient for ordering masks, too.

And once they have your Rx, you can reorder supplies as needed.

Hey birdygirl,

I also was fed up with my DME and their very, very rude service. The answer to your question is, yes, you will need an Rx for a mask from CPAP.com.

CPAP.com has their operation down pat though. If you order a machine or mask, you will be taken to a screen where COAP.com allows you to upload an Rx or you can enter your physician's information and CPAP.com will take care of the rest.

I entered my docs info and can purchase to my hearts content. My rude DME is in the rearview mirror. I refuse to give rude employees and the companies they work for any of my money. I've always been that way.

Best of luck Birdy,

I have a copy of my script, but I was on medical leave and don't have a fax machine. CPAP-dot-Com faxed my doctor a request for a script, and the nurse called me to make sure it was something I had initiated, and I got an email within about 3 hours telling me everything was good to go.

Or you can buy parts and build your own.
