at my wits end!!

Post by sheep1234 » Tue Jul 02, 2013 7:28 am

I've been on cpap therapy since 2009. I love it and couldn't imagine trying to sleep now without it.

My husband snores very loudly. I finally got him to do a sleep study which was done on 6/25/13. He said that he couldn't fall asleep and that he finally did start to sleep deeply in the wee morning hours which is close to when then wake you up. He said the tech never came in to put the mask on him. So he's thinking he's all good.

I'm thinking I'm screwed now and will never get a good night's rest since he snores like a buzz saw. No really. He does. I taped it with my phone and he says it figures he would sound like a motorcycle since he rides one. It's that kind of sound like motorcycle exhaust when it's idling. He gets mad at me when I nudge him to roll over. I'm like what do you want me to do? He doesn't have an answer. He just doesn't want ME to wake HIM up. Awesome, huh?

Here I am with my cpap machine/mask trying to get good rest and he's keeping my awake. All.night.long. My only other option is to move to another room which we really don't have. Only when his son is at his mom's house. His parents sleep in separate rooms and have for several years. I recently found out that his mom is on cpap therapy.

Any ideas?

Thanks for listening. I finally got up at 8am since I wasn't going to get any sleep anyhow and thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas, especially about why his sleep study didn't go like I thought it would.......*sigh*

You know just because the tech never came in to put the mask on doesn't mean a whole lot. If he didn't get much sleep until the wee hours of the morning then he wouldn't have had time to make diagnostic criteria and get the titration part of the study completed. I had that happen to me. I had to go back for a second night titration study because I didn't make criteria until too late to do anything about it and that was with taking a sleep aid.
It all depends on the criteria for stopping the sleep study to add the mask to make it a titration study and how much time is left to get it all done.

So he may think he is out of the woods but he may not be.

When do you find out the results of what sleep he did get?

Typically a split-night study (where OSA is diagnosed during the first part of the night,
and a titration is done during the balance of the night) can only be done if the diagnosis
part is completed within a certain amount of time. If OSA is diagnosed too late, and there
is not enough time to do a titration, a second titration-only study is usually ordered.

So, having taken so long to fall asleep you husband could well still hear a diagnosis
of OSA, and wind up with a CPAP of his very own.

Some studies do not include the titration part. When I went to the sleep clinic, I spent the night all hooked up but did not have a mask put on me. I received the results from the testing and then had a loaner machine for 2 weeks at home to see what my optimum pressures would be. Some clinics do split studies others do not.
Heres hoping you get some good results (he does have osa ) or you learn to sleep with ear plugs in or in another room.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Thanks everyone for your speedy replies!

He said that the tech said she got what she needed so I'm not really sure what's going on.

I don't know when he's supposed to get the results. Hopefully very soon.

He usually works til 10pm so him trying to go to sleep at 10 was very difficult and he really should've been offered something to help him sleep. Maybe he was and he turned it down. He hates to take medication.

I just hope something comes of the sleep study. I've been on him for a few years to get it done and FINALLY it happened. It just didn't go like mine did where they wake you up and put the mask on.

Is it possible to snore like crazy but NOT have OSA??? He is VERY prone to migraines to the point that he qualified for FMLA at work so when he has to call in it's not counted against him. I really thought that getting a good night's rest would help somewhat with that....

The sleep center can't prescribe or dispense sleep aids. The doctor has to do that and the patient has to take it with him to the sleep center.
If he does get called back for a titration study...make sure he has something to take because with his sleep schedule it is unrealistic to expect him to go from work to sleep immediately.
Talk to the doctor about it.

I too thought I must not have sleep apnea ... Because they never gave me a mask like they said I would if they found out I needed it ...

They are not really allowed to tell you what they find, only a qualified Dr is able to tell you what they said ... Sounds silly to me, but what do I know ... Probably some lawyering going on!

I was surprised when the sleep lab called me to schedule my second visit for my titration ... But they couldn't tell me why, just that my Dr had "ordered it" ... I then called my Dr (since he had not told me about this) and chewed him out for lack of communication ... He has since one less patient!

Come to find out ... I too had not slept enough minutes to confirm that I was a candidate for a titration the same night (split study) and once I had the sleep time in, there was not the time left in the night to do the titration which also has time requirements!

Hubby may be getting a machine after all!

That means she saw events at a level high enough to prescribe CPAP.

Next step is CPAP titration by one method or the other.

Sheep,

I hope this is reassuring is some way but I also had two sleep studies. The first verified that I had severe obstructive apnea.

The second study was done to see if CPAP would be helpful and, if so, then titrate the CPAP machine to the most beneficial level.

Take care,

So we were just arguing about how I can't sleep and maybe I was a little irrational but sleep deprivation will do that right? lol
Anyway, he told me I could wear ear plugs. Oh yippee. Let's plug up 2 more holes in my head.

A little later he did say that he had an appt on 7/16 at 1pm. He forgot to tell me. On the calendar it says Doc sleep study 1pm. Don't really know what that means.
So, I guess something is going on. We'll see. I just took an hour nap by myself which was greatly needed!! lol

thanks everybody!

Sounds like he has a follow up with the Dr ... To talk about the results of the sleep study ... May also do some drowsy tests ... Sit in a room and monitor if he dozes off ...

I didn't get enough sleep at my sleep study for the titration part, also. I also got the same line about "we got enough data", and at the followup visit was prescribed an apap machine and mask. My doctor made a guess at where I should start with the apap settings. Turned out to be a good guess, for a starting point. I've done some tuning myself, and things are pretty good at the moment.

My wife likes not having to hear me snore, now that I'm using cpap. And she also sleeps better at night because she doesn't hear me stop breathing any more *smile*. So I think that things will work out for you two, soon!

Sheep, I've just had my second tritration study. No split studies here. My first tritration I didn't go into REM sleep, so they sent me back for another one (I'm not sure if I did go into REM this time either).

I think I might crack the sads if I have to go back for a fourth time

Any doctor who sends a patient to a sleep study without a sleeping pill "just in case" deserves to be flogged.

There would be plenty of flogging going on in Australia then
