AHI POLL: Numbers Please !!!!
AHI POLL: Numbers Please !!!!
Since we've been doing some polling lately I thought this might be of some interest. Obviously this sample will include different Machines and different individual issues but I was wondering where many of us would be with our AHI after treatment.
I hope this poll might provide a benchmark of sorts I kept most of the numbers below 5 since under 5 is considered "treament" level.
Thank you for participating,
Tom

My AI is quite low, usually less than or around 1. But the HI is around 5-7.
How do I get those hypoapneas down? I have been on APAP now for almost 2 months with a pressure of 7-13. I was originally prescribed 8-14 but dropped it a notch because of all the mouth leaks I was getting.
Should I be trying to increase my pressure to get rid of the hypoapneas?

You've described my problem as well, Mary. I think there are at least three possibilities, but I sure don't know which dominates in my own case even:
- could be throat obstructions
- could be constrictive nasal passages
- could be central in nature
I just went to fixed pressures, so I intend to vary my pressures a little to see how the hypopneas behave at different pressures. I couldn't really make sense out of the changes when running in auto mode.

Bill

On nights that I go to bed feeling stuffy, I will occasionally use Afrin® (active ingredient: oxymetazoline) on recommendation from my ENT. Interestingly, even ironically, those are the nights my OA=zero, and the HI is <1. And I wake up breathing easy and feeling like having had a "good-air night". If you're willing to experiment a little, you might try that, it's fast acting (you can tell a difference in 5-10 minutes), long-acting (usually lasts 6-8 hrs, as opposed to 30-60 min for the phenylephrine type sprays).NightHawkeye wrote:- could be throat obstructions

None of these are good for prolonged use, they become ineffective. Or worse, it can have a "rebound" effect. Also not for those with High B.P, heart disease, enlarged prostate, diabetes, Reynaud's, emphysema, tracheoesophogealfistula, and other fun words. ALSO, look for the generic brand of the active ingredient (oxymetazoline). WAAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper.
Some on this forum are alarmist about the dangers of using nose drops or nasal spray. If used in moderation it probably won't hurt, and might help. If it helps, that could shed some insight as to the nature of the HIs. Might be worth an experiment.

I have bad allergies and use flonase nasal spray every night as well as take an antihistamine. So my nose is usually clear, at least in one nostril anyway. I have a deviated septum. Maybe that's the culprit for my elevated HI.
So it sounds like most people get their HI way down.
Sigh, well I'll just have to keep working on it.
