CPAP and ear issue
I have a dysfunctional eustachian tube (it makes my ear close up for no reason and it can take months for it to open up) and the other night when I tested the cpap (I just got it all together Friday after needing a new mask) my ear filled up. Thank God it opened again. I have yet to get through a night on the CPAP (working up to it) but I wonder how much of an issue this may be down the road or if any of you have had an issue with your ears and the cpap. Thank you!

Re: CPAP and ear issue
I don't know a whole lot about ear issues. I had some on CPAP prior to my septoplasty/turbinate reduction & tonsillectomy, but not after. Is there a fix for the Eustachian tube issue? Can you breathe well out of your nose when you don't have a cold? What are your settings? The ear issue is probably more of a problem at higher settings than lower...

I haven't been on this forum for a while, but came here looking for just this subject. For about 6 months I have had a fullness in my ear accompanied by occasional pain. I have seen an ENT who says nothing is wrong. I tried to tell him it was in the eustachian tube to no avail.I had a sneaky suspicion the pap was behind it. Thanks for the info.

I am so sick. I can't do this. I can't do the cpap. I can't do it. I just can't do it anymore.

I had eustachian tube problems for years. It finally stopped when I began taking a nightly antihistamine.
CPAP has not caused ANY ear problems for me. So go for the allergies before quitting cpap.

It's probably best not to start CPAP when you have a cold. Why don't you wait until you recover?

Re: CPAP and ear issue
Because everyone keeps warning me how dangerous this all is and because some days I have horrid brain fog. Thank God I do not pass out in the car, I don't fall asleep when sitting on the couch. I've really lucked out. I was just so sick earlier today and such a freaking whiner. What's weird though is that today my brain fog cleared up. I did all my vitamins, I did some other things I had implemented before I knew I had this and I felt pretty good despite being sick. I've been propping myself up at night, laying on my side as much as I can, doing whatever I can to help my condition and the last two nights I have better dreams, slept longer without peeing and felt pretty good after I was up for a bit. That doesn't mean it is a long term solution, but just enough to get me through this cold. Thanks for encouraging a basket case.

Unfortunately I can't take anything. I'm allergic to it all because most of it has corn derivitives in it and I am allergic to corn. Wouldn't you know it I am also allergic to sudafed. Sooo...I am left with trying all natural things and have found a couple that help a little but not totally. Thank you, though..I was just being a bit of snotty whiner this morning. Literally.

Re: CPAP and ear issue
I hope you get some help for your issue and keep me updated if you learn anything. I have to call the respiratory therapist today. I am miffed because I just learned that we don't have an actual sleep specialist diagnosing us. We have a neurologist who doesn't even specialize in sleep issues!Portageegal wrote:I haven't been on this forum for a while, but came here looking for just this subject. Re: CPAP and ear issue
I have had ear problems for years... antihistamine's didn't help. Would get ear infections almost monthly. Had multiple sets of tubes in my ears due to fluid. Earlier this year my ENT had me have a CT, only to discover that I had been dealing with mastoiditis. Had a modified radical mastoidectomy in Feb. Now I wouldn't wish anybody the pain that the recovery has been, but I'm just saying that sometimes an antihistamine won't fix it.
Re: CPAP and ear issue
I have eustachian tube trouble myself and it is triggered by chemical scents i.e. perfume, cologne, scented products of just about any kind. Fabric softener, dryer sheets, all kinds of stuff.Portageegal wrote:I haven't been on this forum for a while, but came here looking for just this subject. I have to keep away from people who use these products.
Once trace of scent and my face and ear hurt. My eustachian tube closes up to where I want to pinch my nose and try to pop my ear. That usually doesn't help and this can go on for several hours. I sometimes can't lay my head on my pillow because the pain will keep me awake.
I hope you get it figured out.

Re: CPAP and ear issue
I am at a loss what to do. I don't want to risk hurting my ears anymore, but don't want to risk hurting my brain anymore either. I'm scared all around. I have an appointment tomorrow with an ENT to ask some questions. I've heard bipap is better for someone with ear issues but no one has ever suggested this or even looked at that as an alternative. They handed me this machine and sent me out the door and didn't tell me much about risks other than a dry nose.

Re: CPAP and ear issue
Waiting for my cold to clear up, going to an ENT tomorrow afternoon. Sleeping propped up and on my side, but I am going to try the CPAP again tonight. I'm just really frightened of what the sleep apnea is doing to me. I'm pretty good until I try to research more about things and then I'm a basket case about it all. I may need to take some of Ativan my doctor prescribed me after all.SleepingUgly wrote:What ARE you doing now?loopylooloo wrote:I am at a loss what to do.
