Swallowing air
HI
I have been using my bipap for 3+ years with very good results. I only missed 1 night in that time due to camping and couldn't find my mask in the dark tent lol. MY machine is set at 24/20, yes very high. The last 4 nights have been the worst ever. I wake up with stomach so distended from air and I need to sit up and burp at least 20 times to expell the air. I go back to sleep and need to do it again in an hour. This happens all night long. I am at the end of my rope. I do use a chin strap and my mask is a nasal one. The FX for her. I also wear a upper teeth retainer.

Re: Swallowing air
Weird that this would happen so suddenly after such a long time of successful therapy. You should probably call your doctor.
I had a similarly unpleasant night once, but it was the 3rd or 4th night I'd been on treatment.
Maybe try sleeping on your left side? Tucking your chin?

Re: Swallowing air
If after giving the ASV a genuine try you find you just cannot tolerate it, I say switch to it's CPAP mode or CPAP AutoSet mode and work it that way with appropriate resettings. AND, work very hard on your sleep hygiene. If you do that and get out of bed the SAME TIME every morning, which will help in your effort to bed down the same time every night, I'll bet you a mask you'll see really great overall improvements.
Re: Swallowing air
I have found that if I have my evening meal late in the evening eg after 7:30pm I tend to get the burps when I use my cpap machine.
Unfortunately having such a high pressure wouldn't help, I think my head would explode if I had to have my pressuree that high
I really don't have any suggestions, but good luck with sorting it out.

I totally agree that the later in the evening you have a meal or even a snack, the more chance of taking in a lot of air. It's happened to me quite a bit. I use a vpap-asv machine. Also, I go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends, which helps me get to sleep easier and stay asleep. In the past, I never knew that sleep hygiene was so important. It does take awhile for your body to adjust to cpap therapy so it will get better as time goes by.mgaggie wrote:I have found that if I have my evening meal late in the evening eg after 7:30pm I tend to get the burps when I use my cpap machine.

Re: Swallowing air
I started out on Bi-pap at pressures of 21 over 15..... had really bad gas and pain
After enduring 90 days of it, I changed my settings to 20 over 14 and watched my data in sleepyhead to see if I made my OSA any worse...
Gas pain was reduced but was still there.. OSA data did not change.
Next I tried 19 over 14 and my obstructions got worse.
I'm now at a pressure setting of 19 over 14.4.
Aerophagia, gas and pain is gone & my AHI is 0.6
just a suggestion - you might consider making a small change to your pressure settings to see if it helps.... but you have to make sure that you monitor your data to ensure that those changes don't make your OSA worse.

Re: Swallowing air
Hoo, boy. I had my first experience with this in the wee hours this morning.
I woke up with a giant belch rumbling up, and went "BLUUUUuuuUUuuuurrrrrrrrp. Bluuurp. Blurp." And then "PPPFFFFFT" out the other end. Then I played a little two-part counterpoint for a while, like a short classical chamber piece.
It started out very uncomfortable, but being the immature fellow I am, I was laughing by the end. then promptly back to sleep.
I sure can see how this could make one miserable if it happens all the time.
And yes, I had a late-night snack. I suppose I should not do that.

Re: Swallowing air
Hah! Welcome to the club.
I think anything substantial -- even a glass of water -- in the evening might make it worse for me. I needed some tylenol last night an hour before bed, so took it with half a glass of water. Lots of air in my stomach by morning.
Normally I eat about 3-4 hours before bed.
I'll report if this trend seems consistent.

Re: Swallowing air
I had a late snack about 8:30pm on Saturday and boy did I pay for it that night!
My brothers would of been impressed with my burps that night, as I could never join in with them beforw.
